When he is saying that people are nostalgic of the 30's I think he doesn't mean a)everyone and b)that they are nostalgic with everything that went on in the 30s

It is a nostalgia for a more cohesive society, and for more drama in politics and public life.

Exactly. What I'm saying is a bit hyperbolic but it's clear life is increasingly more difficult and a lot of people are looking to the past...and not always in a good way.

That doesn't represent anything like what I have experienced in any of the 3 countries I have lived in over the past year. People are angry at governments and banks, not black people, well not anymore than they were before.

Both tendencies are there. One is anti-capitalist and the other racist.

Yup, political polarization is back in style. Look at France right now, Sarko was able to get away with mass deportations without much of an outrage, and as soon as he touches the pensions the country rises up in arms.

Though I got to give credit to Europeans for at least having a movement against the cuts, here the few of us think banks and speculators are a bigger problem than taxes are a fringe group.

Thats just wrong, there is no greater racism out of the economic situation. When the French economy was at its best they came damn close to making Le Pen their president, just because they still have some that hold that view doesn't mean its now because of the economy.

Besides, it may not be perfect, but Europe is still the most tolerant, secular and liberal culture there is.

I was not referring to the crisis in particular.I am saying that lots of economically frustrated people(there were quite a few way before the crisis hit) in Europe consider immigration to be at least one of the main causes for their problems. It's a long standing issue. And people don't care only of immediately economic factors. Many people dislike multiculturalism or the way this is manifested in present day Europe, others as i said before long for a more homogeneous society with congerging values. Present economic and cultural tendencies are in fact(and by defualt) extremely conductive to racism.I expect much more of it in the future.

*And yes,Europe leads global civilisation still.

Don't know if somebody speaks Arabic here, but notice how the commentator says "Messi" and "Barcelona" in the beginning of the video.

Secular yes, tolerant? I'm sorry but there's no way Europe is more tolerant than North America. You make monkey chants at an American football game and you get the shit beat out of you.

Both have serious problems but here we don't stick people in ghettos and pretend they don't exist.

Agreed although we have plenty of ghettos here in the US that we 'pretend' don't exist...If you've ever been to downtown Chicago, you might think blacks have been deported or something

Oh, I'm living in DC right now and segregation has never been more obvious in my life, but nobody denies that Southeast DC is "American" the way they do in Europe.

To be honest I think Canada is the lesser of evils, but even in Canada there's still plenty of trouble.
