9 - Samuel Eto'o

Agreed although we have plenty of ghettos here in the US that we 'pretend' don't exist...If you've ever been to downtown Chicago, you might think blacks have been deported or something

That could turn into 1K pages debate and it forces people who come to the thread to read about Eto'o to read stuff they might not want to. I have nothing against talking about it, but please do it in another thread. Thank you very much in advance :)

P.S. The real reason why I'd like it to continue elsewhere is I don't want Eto'o thread to be bigger than Ibra thread :D

Oh, I'm living in DC right now and segregation has never been more obvious in my life, but nobody denies that Southeast DC is "American" the way they do in Europe.

To be honest I think Canada is the lesser of evils, but even in Canada there's still plenty of trouble.

canada has definite racial problems because they sometimes like to operate like racism does not exist while in USA there was a big problem and people have dealt with it. canada has specific laws to combat racism which is among the best in the world but the general perception that it does not exist is a big problem amongst people here

Well said. Canada is far from perfect in that regards but I just feel like there's a society wide attempt to combine integration and acceptance of other cultures that is more sincere than the US or Europe.

some parts of europe are massively backward about racism, ironically enough it's the countries that don't have a history of enslaving africans back in the day. I guess the close proximity slavery induces, over time, gets worn down into some kind of acceptance.

I dunno, Meta. How then do you explain France? (But yeah, this thread is probably not the best place for such a debate)

I've been to Europe (Spain, France, and Russia if you consider it Europe). People there are much more racist than here. The difference between racism in USA and racism in Europe is that in Europe people are much more open and can show it while I know there are many elite whites in the US who are certainly racist but hide it deep down inside. In small communities in the south and even up north (states such as Minnesota, Georgia, Tennessee) you could find backward people who still believe it's the 50's and segregation is still alive.

Luckily, I live in California. Here racism is something that is highly frowned upon. Besides, there are many different races and ethnicities here, more so than any other place I've been to.

Sorry to go off- topic, I really had to join in on this conversation. I hope the mods can make a topic for us where this discussion can be held. It's very interesting and something that I can talk about a lot.

I hate to derail the Eto'o topic like this but I can't resist, I've always been a major social science nerd and I've been closely following how the global depression is resulting in similar trends in North America and Europe where the same messages are being expressed very differently. I'll rarely say the US is superior to Europe at something, but as poor as our track record is with racism here I find what is acceptable in Europe to be shocking.

the french are weird.

that's how I explain france.

That's pretty much all there is to it.

Booing black players occurs only in a small number of people in countries with no real integrated black communities. So you are criticising people for a lack of racial sensitivity when they have never had need for it. Your same example in UK, Holland or Germany is not possible.

Here we don't get overt racism, but we still see a lot of 'soft segregation' among young people, i.e. in school white people hang out with mostly white people, blacks with mostly blacks, Asians with mostly Asians, etc. It's not really racism but you still rarely see mixed groups of friends among young people. Myself, the vast majority of my friends are white, not something I actually tried to do but really most people still gravitate toward others of their own race. When you get older it's not like that as much (now I have a more diverse group of friends) but when I was in high school I can really only think of one non-white person who I considered to be a good friend. Again, it's not racism, but more like an unwritten rule of social etiquette among young people, I doubt very many people think "oh I'm not going to be friends with this person because he's not of my race" but things like that just happen automatically.

But yeah guys, perhaps this type of discussion should continue in its own thread, since there's a lot to say about this subject, provided it stays civilized like it is now. It can be a touchy subject though, as is most political/social discussion, so don't let it get out of hand.
