Thiago was a big loss but we should move on. Both Song and Busi should have a shot at CM position, not saying Xavi replacement but they certainly can bring smt to the play in midfield. And I really want to see Masc back at DM. SO, 6 players for 3 spots in midfield is good enough. Next, I say we sign 2 CB and 1 CF (to replace Villa and well, Pedro will screw up)

Yeah, now that you mentioned it Song could probably do well as CM, he has a killer ball, he's good at passing distribution, second best completion rate in La Liga after Xavi, and does seem fairly quick on the ball.

Well, he played quite well, I don't agree with you, ShandyFFM. It was a tough game, first of the season against the best side in Europe since last season. I don't remember him losing the ball, not even once. All passes accurated and good. What much he could do?

Pointless transfer. Keita left so they automatically got a replacement for him, although we didn't really need one. Thy probably thought they could use him as a CB, as well, but we all know how that turned out. They should have bought a CB and just have Mascherano fill in for Busquets when needed. I have nothing against Song, he is a good player, but he was never really needed. But now that he's here and hasn't done bad, I don't see him leaving any time soon.

I thought he looked terrible today. His passes looked shaky, too indecisive, he's thinking too much. He'll never get another opportunity like he did today with all of the Confederations Cup players still on vacation.

If he can't rotate with Xavi @ CM at all this season, there's no reason for us to be paying him as much as we are to just be Busquets' back-up. Mascherano should move back to DM and as an emergency-only option @ CB. That would open us up for 2 new defenders, which the club needs badly.

No reason to have both Mascherano and Song. Having both is a waste when we need new defenders.

(As for why we bought him, I remember Rosell saying Tito requested him and he wanted to convert him to CB.)

His transfer wasn't necesarily a failed one . Busquets doesn't have to play all the games in a season and Song is a decent replacement for him.

Yeah, 19 million is a bit too much for a player to just have around.

Why can't we move Mascherano back to his natural position and that would force us to get new 2 defenders.

Tata can bring in the guy he is familiar with Santiago Vergini and we can go after a veteran defender like Daniel Agger. We need defenders, not a natural DM who can't function as one and another expensive back-up. Mascherano or Song have to go in my opinion.

The experiment with Mascherano as a CB has to end and I think selling Song makes perfect sense to accommodate these moves I have stated. We can't keep on trying the same thing and to expect different results.

Me too. I just wonder if Masch can do well as a dm again, for Barça. Pep didn't give him much time as one, and Song was good most of the time he played. Tough call.

I agree with your post but I don't have faith that the Barca board will do good moves in the team. In the end I wouldn't be surprised if we don't get any deffenders at all.

I would keep Mascherano because he is good as a CB in games against small teams. In this way , the ones who are first choice for CB can rest for the big games. Also 2 seasons ago he was our 3 best player of the season.
