Starting to think that if he ever turned out world class here it might be as DM,he doesn't have the creativity to break defense but he is capable passer (non-creative) with gr8 ability to retain the ball. If he improve his defense he could do well in that position.
May be that will be good news for Samper and he get moved to CM as everyone wanted?!
He gives me vibes of a DLP, not a DM. He can be someone like Xabi Alonso. I have a sense that this is the reason why Madrid wanted him as well. I do not agree that he does not provide creative passes.
He is a player who can pass and has creativity. At the moment though, he needs to develop a better first touch, because he hesitates a bit when he receives the ball with some pressure on him, and that hesitation makes him lose control of the situation by giving himself less time to make a call. A bad first touch is what gets in him trouble.
I noticed that when he makes a great first touch, the execution and even the vision is there. Very few misplaced passes and some of the passes he makes look easy, but aren't because they are 30m. passes hit with precision and intensity. He knows what to do once he has given himself time to think -- and a midfilder gives himelf more or less time to think (of course, talking about fractions of a second, but that can be the difference in midfield) depending on his first touch. If he improves his first touch, he has all the tools to be a player like Xabi Alonso or even better.
I also think both Busi and him would benefit from a double pivot system. Busquet's drop of form is primarily down to not having players closer to him. We need to bring back short pasing in our midfield, and double pivot will help that. Both our fullbacks push up, and we play in the offense with a 2-4-4, with Messi in a no10 basically, shielded by Busi and Gomes has 5 targets ahead of him. All our offensive trio and the overlapping fullbacks. And at the same time, we keep a double pivot who can react in time in case of a couterattack. This also helps because both Busi and Gomes aren't fast players, and they would benefit from forming a double pivot. Basically, we should switch from a 4-3-3 with 1 DM and 2 midfielders, to a 4-3-3 with 2 DMs and Messi who we know doesn't work off the ball.
In my mind, we need the whole right flank re-done this summer. Both a RB and a RW need to be signed. Right now Alexis would be a great player to have on that right. We need a similar hard working right wing player.
