André Gomes

The main problem is this guy just isn't Barca quality. When we're looking to sign a new midfielder, whether it be as a starter or as a backup, would we ever want someone who isn't at least better than Gomes? That's the main problem. He's the lowest common denominator, the worst a Barca midfielder can be while still managing to get minutes. Even when he has a "Solid" game, he's still yet to have a game where he stands out. The football world as a whole is able to recognize talent in a player when he shows his quality. Gomes might as well be playing for Real Sociedad for all the recognition as a quality player he receives. Most Portugal fans seem to actively think he's beyond shit, too.

I find it weird how people seem to act like there's a lot of room for interpretation here.

We're talking about a guy with 0 goals and 0 assists this season when he's supposedly a "forward minded player", as well as that 1 key pass in 11 games figure that henias cited. He isn't a tempo setter whatsoever really or impactful in possession, as he has the LEAST passes/90mins of any midfielder in the squad (less than even Deulofeu, for reference). He doesn't have a knack for getting into goalscoring positions or the tools to create his own shot (dribbling, acceleration, etc.) and his finishing and instincts are atrocious when he is in the box.

On the other end of the pitch he might be even worse, if that's possible. We all know from numerous performances how shocking he is in defense. We all know he's a foul merchant, and he currently is head and shoulders above anyone else in the squad in fouls/90mins (2.2 p/g where the next highest is 1.6). He has no instincts on this end either, often in the wrong position and often fouling in ANY difficult 1v1's.

Seriously this guy is like the Messi of being preposterously mediocre. He doesn't pass the eye test at all, it's even WORSE with the stats test as shown above. This guy is Heskey/Stewart Downing levels of meme bad, and nothing less. The jokes were always about the likes of Douglas/Song/Mathieu but Gomes has actually proven to be orders of magnitude worse than them. There is almost nothing that is flattering to represent his impact, be it match comps/stats/flashy highlights/etc. I don't think it's even slightly controversial to say there are MANY players out there who would be more useful as a backup and would add quantifiable, real value to this team.

Actually I think it is the opposite, problem is his finishibg and in some cases his speed

The sample size of shots or attacking opportunities is small to analyze well, so it's hard to tell.

What I see is that often times when he vacates the midfield to go forward he basically takes himself out of the game and runs straight into heavy marking. From what I've seen of him shanking easy chances in the box (the Clasico one being the biggest example this season) his finishing is woeful too. Funnily enough, the guy has yet to register even a SINGLE shot on target this season.

It is the tall player mentality, running inside the box to snatch away 1-2 defenders, so Suarez and Messi can get some space to operate. But so far it isn't working.

Gomes is suitable for a target man, typical centre forward physique. The movement that you mentioned (the quote) reminds me of what basically Dimitar Berbatov used to do at Manchester United - getting rid of the ball as fast as he can, then running into heavy traffic inside the box and disappearing forever.

His speed is fine. His finishing though, it's absolutely atrocious. Like, he rarely shoots on target.

I also think he gets into busy traffic too much and loses the ball as a result.

Way over the top. You make it sound as if he's worse than Douglas. I get it. You don't like the player. You still have to give him some credit. Even the journos on Sport and MD, who used to bash him non stop last season think he's improved a lot this season.

I can't recall ever seeing him put a shot on target for Barca or for Portugal and this includes those slow rollers that are easily scooped up by the goalkeeper. And he tends to lose the ball no matter who he moves into, in some games him losing the ball in midfield to a single player and blatantly fouling him as he tries to recover it has become the new Dani Alves cross.

Improved, but still pretty damn bad.

I'm more towards acceptable enough for a squad player level. He can still grow some more, he's young. I've said before that if a 40m offer comes up I'd sell, but atm he's not a problem at all.

Except he has a bit larger of a role than mere squad player and always has apart from Valverde's early time here when Gomes was getting very few minutes. And even then, I can't say I agree that he's good enough for squad player level. Is there any universe where we buy even a squad player with hopes of him being around the level of Andre Gomes and his abysmal statistics and game influence?

Seems like Valverde likes him plenty as a squad player. And these days 40m. doesn't bring you a clear cut starter at a huge club like Barca.
