Hit fits well with Everton on what Marco Silva wants.

He's basically their Midfield distributer in a two-man Midfield with Gylfi Sigurðsson as the #10 and Idrissa Gueye being the destroyer in the Midfield.

He's a bit more than that. In the past we have had Gareth Barry or Schneiderlin playing that role but neither had the ability to also run with the ball through midfield. Gomes gives us that. When we had Barkley he did that job but it meant we were then short in attack because he needed to drop back to do it. Last season we had no one and it was a big weakness leading to a lot of long balls.

This makes Gomes very important to us because it allows Sigurdsson to stay up front and do damage which is why Sigurdsson is having a fantastic season.

It still angers me we never tried Deulofeu as our 10 and Barkley as our 8 when ironically and no surprise to me that's where they are playing now for their respective clubs.

Yeah that is exactly what I read on some everton-forums. And the partnership with the other guy on the midfield who takes care of the defence-aspect in the midfield, works good.

Thing is, Gomes isn't worth more than 20m for us, and 25m considering the market. But for Everton he is apparently a whole lot more than that. He is still young, fits the team like a glove and can be a core player for many years. I hope we can use that and get like 45-50m, Would be great.

I think it will depend on who we can sell. There is various reports but the one that came out at the time which I believe is true was we just couldn't afford him in the summer having spent so much money over the last few windows.

However if we can get rid of Schneiderlin and/or Tosun who were both bought for big money then it won't be an issue but that's a big if.

Oh well, i read that Barca just didnt want to sell him. Don't know if that's because you offered to low or barca trusted him to do well and bring the price up or just as a wildcard option for the squad next summer.

You probably wanted him for 20-25 in the summer, and Barca said no.

Thought it kinda evened out with the sell of Lukaku? So Everton has no money? Schneiderlin is over the hill isnt he? Who would want to buy him and that for big money as well.

Still, Silva is horny about Gomes, he really fits the team, i think everton just might to strech them over the limit to get gomes - if he continues his good form ofc. Barca just need to play their cards right.

Brands at the time said we didn't have the money and that Barca wanted only to sell before giving in to a loan and Silva just recently said Barca refused to sell.

Personally I believe the account from Brands just because it was closer to the time and because I think Silva is trying to lessen the blow in case we won't be able to afford him.

Ultimately I doubt he will go for much less than 40m and I'm not sure we can afford that.

Silva saying Barca refused to sell, doesn't have to be false, if the unsaid premise was the amount Barca wanted to sell for, if you know what i mean. But we will never know what really happened and the only thing we now for sure is that Everton wants him. And Gomes probably is pretty happy about Everton as well, considering how the fans treated him at barca. But it's really a shame if you dont have the money to buy him, because it would be a win-win-win situation for all parties, if you had 40-45m. Some fans even say they dont care if its 60m.

Everton fans?

Yea we love him but I don't think brands will be so emotional :)

I think we will get the deal done because ultimately I think all parties want to see the deal done.

Dont remember the forum/page, but yes, everton-fans. "60m", "dont care for how much money" and stuff like that.

I agree, but you could have said the same about Rafinha and Inter.

How about selling Vlasic? Very promising midfielder on loan from Everton.

Yea the history with him is a bit strange. We bought him of a Croatian team after we played them in the UEFA cup. Then because we bought a number of attacking midfielders and neither Koeman or Allardyce played a style suited to him he struggled for game time. I get the feeling it was either him or Lookman because there just wouldn't be the game time for both and Lookman is special.

I liked him but he did seem a bit slow and lightweight for the wing - especially under Koeman and Allardyce who like fast athletic wingers but I think Vlasic might end up playing in a similar role as Modric.

Would we be willing to sell to fund the purchase of Gomes. Potentially yes but I think we should keep him and maybe allow him to stay out on loan because as far as I remember he is contracted for another 4 years. Then he could come back and challenge Sigurdsson.

I'm sure we can raise the money selling the likes of McCarthy and Schneiderlin. Some lower league club will probably take a punt on them in January.
