Andrea Pirlo

Not at all, infact free kicks are one of the most clear cut parts of football to analyse. You shoot, you score or you shoot, you don't score - simple as that.

Of course Pirlo is not a bad free kick taker. I've seen matches where he scores 2 in 1 game (for Italy iirc). Infact, he's one of the best set piece takers I've ever seen. I was answering somebody else's question on how many free kicks Pirlo scores per year.

You have to factor in other things such as the angle & distance of the kick though. Some are just simply a lot harder than others to take.

For individual free kicks, yeah. On average, no.

Judgment comes into play too. If the angle is too hard or the distance is too much, a player shouldn't go for goal.

It's quite fair to assume that (barring people like Ronaldo) free kick takers of different teams would on average take similar angle/distance of free kicks over a whole season.

There's no proof that Pirlo consistently takes harder free kicks throughout the season. I know Ronaldo does but he's quite deservingly called an idiot for doing that.

Exactly, those stats make him look worse than he is. To someone who's never seen him play before one would think he's awful looking at those.

He was just bad for one season. This season he has scored 5, more than Messi.

Hasn't Messi scored 6? 2 against RM, 1 against Betis, 1 against Granada and 2 for Argentina (against Uruguay and Paraguay, I believe)

I think we were discussing this recently and if I remember correctly, someone dug up the info and Messi scored 7 this season.

For some players you just gotta have immense respect and admiration, he is one of them. Pure genius and great man, such a shame he never played for us.
