Andrea Pirlo

Tbh, I've said it more than once here and I'll say it again, always thought Pirlo is a better player than Xavi. Only by a bit though. He doesn't have the matching trophy cabinet, but that's down to how poor Milan has generally been over the last 10 years, despite the CL wins and all that. He's still rippin' it up at Juve though! Champion. Legend.

I disagree there a bit Anton

He still got his two Champions League medals, couple Club World Cups, Serie A title. Not too shabby & he played in a beautiful team.

Got his WC winners medal in 2006 & IMO was the best player of the tournament. Much like i thought he was the best player of the tournament Euro 2012.

Talking mainly league with Milan. That's where he falls behind Xavi when it comes to the trophies really, and 1 less CL?

The thing that makes Xavi so special is that he is largely responsible for the success of two of the greatest teams of all time on both club and international level. The way he plays the game has been expanded to the rest of the team by Guardiola and Del Bosque. Messi has been the star player of this Barcelona side and over the last couple of years Iniesta for the Spanish side but it is because of Xavi that these teams have played the way they do and why they have been so successful. Without Xavi, I'm not sure if tika-taka would exist. Both sides would still have played possession based attacking football but I don't think it would have existed in the form it does now where the opposition is completely starved of possession and passed into submission in such a patient manner.

I love watching Pirlo play the game and he is spectacularly elegant where as Xavi is more subtle in his elegance and playing style. I actually probably prefer watching Pirlo and there is an argument for him being better for Xavi but I don't agree with it. Xavi has had such a huge influence on football over the last few years and it's hard to think of a player who has ever been of such importance and influence simultaneously at both club and international level.

Xavi had a MUCH better side than the Italy Pirlo played a leading role in winning the WC in 2006 though. Managing to lead such a defensive side to victory is more impressive for me. And yeah, I love his elegance, he's just brilliant. Spain have been overall the best international side not just because of Xavi, despite him being one of the 3 key men. I'm not at all saying the rest of Italy is/was poor and that Pirlo was the only great player, the WC winning side had some great players too, but Spain are overall quite a bit better. The argument can go either way tbh, I'm not willing to argue too much because they both have been absolutely magnificent for their clubs and countries and nothing can be taken away from them. They both deserve all the plaudits they've gotten.

It has been a pleasure to witness both of them at their best.

A few pages back people saying he's "not bad" taking free kicks :p

Beautiful goal! Perfect way to mark his 100th cap.

I don't think anyone actually thinks he's "not bad" as in average, someone just posted the stats from one season as something interesting/weird. If anyone thinks Pirlo is average then they probably don't watch him.

Are you saying that Xavi is basically the father of Tiki Taka? That really doesn't make sense. The idea of Tiki Taka is older than when Xavi first began playing.

No I'm not saying Xavi is the father of tika taka. I'm saying it is largely because of him that it has been implemented so effectively for both Barcelona and Spain over these past few years. No other player passes the ball in such a methodical and consistent manner as Xavi does and when is is missing or not playing so well, we don't see the system work as well. Everyone on this forum talks about Xavi's successor and how the midfield isn't as fluid when he isn't playing. If Xavi didn't exist then I really doubt that Barcelona and Spain would have been played the system so effectively and achieved what they have over these last few years. This doesn't mean that tika taka is doomed when Xavi retires. Both Spain and Barcelona will have to go through the post-Xavi transitional period but there's enough talent there schooled in the way of playing for continued success. If it wasn't for Xavi and his role in making tika taka so succesful though, I'm not so sure if both Spain and Barcelona would be so set on playing this style of football for the foreseeable future, certainly the national team anyway. He is the most important footballer in the history of Spanish football.
