One post above yours I've described why OPTA is pointless. Reply? OPTA stats. So yes, Pedro Leon is the 10th best performer in the whole of La Liga this season and Gerrard had a better Euros than Pirlo, based on something "concrete".

I'm not wasting my time here.
So you showed example which isn't even mildly the same as the situation in the final? And you are telling me that Pedro Leon isn't 10th best performer? Why?

You wasted your time trying to find one example to show how wrong they are, just that you failed even at that, you actually proved how close they are.

anybody seen this movie? its seems like the vast amount of americans that have recently start to watch football(soccer) tries to turn out sport into this shit as well. i wouldn't be surprised if soon some fat dudes who have never even seen the game come right from college and start to steal our game and turn this into shit. with all these stats etc. try to build a team around numbers and not even bother to watch the games. sitting on their computers and try to calculate a better team. and especially now after we have seen barca featuring on 60 minutes...

i just leave this here as well.
Stats are important to prove your point when talking to haters. When they come with "Messi is nothing without XaviIniesta" i just present stats and the argument is settled.

Moneyball was a good film, but as FCBarca said it's not applicable to football. So many more variables in the sport and you can't examine someone's productivity as a goalkeeper/defender in the same way you can with baseball.

Iniesta was named player of the tournament, not only the final. And yes, considering the entire tournament, he deserved that title more than Xavi.

OPTA-stats are actually great tool when comparing performances because they are based on something concrete. They usually spot on, at least on my subjective level.

Saying that OPTA stats or whatever are based on anything concrete is not fully correct. A highly disciplined pair of CBs and a DM can smother attacks before it gets dangerous. A midfielder can be able to control the pace of the game, set up plays and attract defenders to himself. A forward can make runs off-the-ball and create space for others. None of all this is related to statstics. So, instead of 'concrete', 'plays that meet the eye more often' will be more accurate as they don't always show the bigger picture.

If would have been an absoloute travesty if Iniesta won it ahead of Messi and Ronaldo. Disgusting decision even.

I'm American, and you have to understand that baseball is a different sport that lends itself exceptionally well to statistical analysis. It is a team game, but to a large extent, one's individual performance is entirely unrelated to who else is on your team because, when you are at bat, it is just you vs. the pitcher basically. There are small factors based on your team. For instance, if you've got a really good batter right after you in the batting order, pitchers are less likely to risk walking you; they don't want you on base in case the batter after you bombs a home run. As a result, the pitcher might give you a more hittable pitch instead of pitching around the strike zone and risk walking you. For the most part, though, a hitter's output is quite unrelated to what team he is on. Similarly, a pitcher's output is largely unrelated to what team he is on (unless you are talking about the win-loss record).

Football is different. More than virtually any other sport, a player's output is dependent on his team.

With that said, though, statistics DO have their place in football. It's just that, unlike baseball, there are some things (like who makes intelligent runs to draw defenders away, for instance) that can't really be statistically quantified.

Now I will ask again, what kind of beautiful magic Iniesta produced that warrants him the MoM before Xavi or Alba?

Have a look for yourself:
http://www.metacafe.com/watch/8962258/andres_iniesta_vs_italy_euro_2012_final/

The Don played the key pass that opened up the Italian defense to score the crucial opening goal. That one pass alone made him contender for Man of the Match. You can look at the MotM as the player that played the best or also as the player that had the biggest influence on the outcome of the game. The rest of his performance was supreme though. He also did 2 'dribbles' just in the first minute of that video. He was also subbed off and missed the last 7 minutes of play which would have reduced his stats. Fortunately the beauty of football is far beyond what can be put into numbers.
