Messi's nemesis is actually Thomas Müller. Whenever Müller performs well (like in the 2010 WC game between Argentina and Germany and the 2013 CL semi-final between us and Bayern), Messi flops. Look out this time.
He did fine in the friendly in 2010 and 2013 although Muller was subbed to allow ter Stegen to replace Zieler. That is more down to the tactical set up in those games.
Low loves bringing Reus (now Draxler who is one to really watch and better than Reus) and Muller to tuck into midfield and double up on either the opponents wingers, press the opposition fullback or tuck into midfield and harry someone like Messi.
Given that Messi was dropping deep into his own half in 2010 with an inexperienced di Maria and Maxi in midfield
Diego, he was unsurprisingly less effective. This time at least the coach knows what he is doing. Messi will get support from one of the fullbacks should he pop up on that side out wide.
Argentina were in a low gear. Some nice possession football. They will need to be sharper game by game in the group and there was the odd sloppy pass which can result in dangerous turnovers.
Main thing is only Palacio has a real problem injury wise and that is just an ankle sprain. Zab, Garay and Higgy were all rested. They may lack match sharpness though but will be fresh.
One concern is Rojo. Great as a centreback but at fullback his lack of speed is more pronounced as is his tendency to tuck in still and not show the opposition player wide. We really needed a natural fullback in one of the spots. However Sabella like Low prefers centrebacks in these roles.
