Stats doesn't mean anything knowing that the 2 players don't have the same role, worst for a 10 Messi workrate is pretty poor.
So you'd rather use anecdotal evidence to prove one is better than the other?

I think Messi has played rather conservatively so far with regards to energy. We saw in the first half against Belgium and in the game against the Swiss that Messi can run. I'd prefer Messi saves his energy for the Semis and the Final, and then amp up his work rate, rather than burn out due to injury like Di Maria last match.
Messi covered almost 9 000 metres against Belgium and was quite aggressive. Robben ran almost 9 500 metres in 90 minutes against Costa Rica.
Not that BIG of a difference as some people make it out to be, besides, why does it even matter? Both have vastly different roles in their respective teams.

I don't think Messi can provide more running. Post-Belgium match (where he had to put just a bit more of a defensive shift even though he was one of the 2 forwards) he said he felt tired when he approached the ball. Same interview he said he ran more than usual even though his distance ran is no different to his other games. Only difference was 'off-possession' movement was a higher percentage of the overall distance run.
Maybe his stamina really has dropped because of that vomit thingy.
I will say this though. Robben looks to be a man on a mission. He showed it the last couple seasons with Bayern. And I think the chances he didn't take in South Africa still haunt him. He really, really wants to bring his nation the World Cup trophy.
Well I dunno if it's solely about the vomit because there are other equally plausible reasons. Off the bat we have to remember how lazy and pedestrian Barca's season was as well as Tata's playground training sessions. Not a single Barcelona player aside from Alexis has been playing at an adequate level of stamina or fitness in this WC (just maybe Mascherano, but his movement isn't really exerting). I've heard rumors of players hiring fitness trainers and all the recorded sessions look like child's play more than actual preparation. Messi definitely did not go into this WC as a fully energetic athlete as he should be.
Another is the conditions of the game. Midday heat in the afternoon, extremely dry air. Messi was seen getting drinks of water a notable amount of times against Belgium IIRC, indicating a dry throat and dehydration. That too would cause him to go out of breath more easily and not have as much stamina.
He obviously can't just get up and start running at Robben levels for the entire game but he definitely can put in more and I hope he's fitter for the next match. It's not just about covering more distance but being more active and involved in attack (especially since he's now Argentina's only transition player). For Barca's season, I want Lucho enlisting Messi in those Iron Man runs ASAP
Oh really, please tell me how Costa Rica parked the airbusMessi was invisible against an ultra-defensive Iran, apart from his goal. Robben was a constant threat against Costa Rica, a defensive team like Iran. In this world cup, and arguably throughout the last season as well, Messi relies on single moments of magic instead of being a constant threat. Robben hasn't drifted out of games like Messi in this WC. So I agree with Gilles: Robben is better than Messi at the moment. Not overall, just at the moment.
Messi scored a winner for his team when it mattered against Iran... what did Robben do against Costa Rica over 120 minutes?
