Needs to play forward passes regardless. Expose Messi and Suarez poor movements, because those two are not doing their job.
Then he'll be blamed for making bad passes. It doesn't work like that. With a midfield passer, if the team is dead slow and lazy as fuck, his course of action is to recycle possession. Which is what Arthur is doing. And this is what Xavi would've done as well. Recycle possession and wait for the opening to appear.
There is no window of opportunity for a good forward pass, there is no pass. Simples.
Arthur looked better with the 2nd string vs Tottenham than today, simply because in the first half vs Tottenham, there was a lot of energy from the boys, and a lot of willingness to press and do work off the ball.
Hipotethically, let's say Arthur has the ball and there is no good movement around him for a good short pass, or even for a good 2nd station medium pass. He basically has 4 options give or take, each with a different chance of success:
1) Go rogue and try to dribble his way through. Extremely low chances of success and potentiall deadly for his own team.
2) Force a pass to an imobile target, in which case the marking defender would probably get there first, resulting in a slightly less dangerous turnover than point 1).
3) Go for a very very wide long range pass to a player who is so far away from him, that he is marked in a more laxed way. The distance being this big means the amount of time the ball takes to travel 50m. that pass becomes an aerial duel. Another turnover, but by far a better type than 1) or 2) because it's a turnover deep into the opponent's half.
4) Recycle possession and wait for a better opportunity. Which brings us to another case in which the same 4 courses of action are presented to a player in possesion from a deep position facing a 10 men packed defense.
If we want to win the CL again with high chances the solution is to bench the lazy players, and bring back pressing and off the ball movement with intensity. At least start trimming them to only having one, Messi.
