They probably meant: never surrender on a field, a fighting character. Not only being technically good.

How were they mentally crumbling? They were under siege for most of the game. There's only this much pressure you can withstand before you start letting in goals.

Pique is a clown though so agree with that.

Not only Valverde needs to step up character wise but there's several big whigs in this squad that need a hard reality check and not any pampering to.

The team is full of champions who have competed and won top honors. You can't have character when you win and not have it when you lose. Doesn't work like that. You might accuse them of lacking motivation, that's fair, but not character.

The undoing of this team has been talent. They've neglected the most important part of a team, the midfield, for far too long. Cannot do that and hope to win every year. Now their biggest issue is a conservative coach who is too risk averse and poor tactical planner.

Though if you do think the team lacks character, adding a 31 year old injured player who is more likely than not to see limited playing time, hardly fixes that issue. Just saying.

Yes, although he isn't in his mid 20s and is not any longer a top 3 midfielder, he's still capable of playing at the highest level. He lacks discipline off the pitch, but on it he works his ass off for the team, and never lacks motivation in big games (sometimes has too much though). For a midfielder he is also scoring surprisingly often.

I think he still has one or two great years in him, depending on his stamina. He was never lengthy injured in his career until just recently, I don't know if his knee could be a problem or if it was a one-time thing, but if it's not you should have made an okay aquisition for a fair price.
