Brazilian midfielder Rodrigo Caio is set to become Atlético Madrid’s latest signing, after passing a medical in Madrid on Tuesday.
The 22 year-old will join on a year-long loan deal from São Paulo according to reports, with an option to buy at the end of the season for an undisclosed fee.
Caio, who is also capable at centre-back, was officially announced as a Valencia player only last week, but the move fell through due to rumoured fitness problems.
Having undergone three medical assessments with Los Che, they decided not to sign him and released a statement on Monday stating that this was due to ‘different problems with the transfer’.
Despite the youngster’s injury , reports in Brazil have suggested that he was offered a different deal upon arrival at the Mestalla that he originally agreed to, and that the two clubs failed to negotiate a payment plan.
Atleti and Sevilla had been linked before Valencia confirmed his signing, and first thing this morning, he and agent Deco were at the FREMAP hospital in Las Rozas to undertake his fourth medical of the week.
Deco works closely with Jorge Mendes and represents his agency Gestifute, fuelling speculation that the rojiblancos have taken Caio as yet another favour to the Portuguese tycoon.
In the past, we’ve seen new players frozen out by Simeone having not been brought to the club at his request, but whether the former Brazil U20 captain falls into that category remains to be seen.
