With better teammates obviously you can perform better. Messi played beyond human level with the help of xavi and iniesta. But messi also shown that he can win matches on his own completely which ronaldo has yet to prove at real madrid. Ronaldo and Messi had a similar year individually imo, and on their given day messi is still better than ronaldo and messi had a good wc and Ronaldo won some important trophies. There was no clear favorite, his insane goal scoring record at the beginning of the season influenced many votes.
