I don't think the club prioritize a midfielder at the moment. Not getting Wijnaldum will just mean that Ilaix and Riqui get more minutes. Wrong or right, I think the spending priority first and foremost is on a WC striker, then a CB and LB.

That's the opinion of many fans, but not of the coach and the board. And it is being reported

Koeman is very clear that he needs to further strengthen the midfield. One of the key pieces in his new project is a midfielder with a good physique and good abilities on the ball.

The fact we had agreed with Winaldum means Koeman sees a new midfielder as absolutely essential, and is not content with covering that by giving minutes to Puig or Nico Gonzalez.

If you ask me, I agree as I think it's clear that the minutes of Wiladum would not have been at the expense of either Pedri or Illaix, but rather of Busquets

What I don't get is the Gundodan rumour. He is not a 'physical' midfielder in any sense, and his traits are covered already in our midfield.

I have no opinion about Graverbach or Merino ( I haven't watched them). Fabian Ruiz is again not a profile similar to the one we are after.

It's better if we seriously move for a real physical beast in the midfield (albeit with technical qualities) like Renato Sanches or Carmaviga, instead of half-solutions

Not true. Gundogan will score more goals and assists than Pedri/Busi and Frenkie combined in a season. Not really the same.

We lack offensive producer in midfield and speed/quickness.

But we are not looking for someone to score goals.
We are looking for physicality, aggression, and high defensive workrate.
Gundogan is a baller, does not seem to feature well in any of the above categories

We have been linked with Lorenzo Pellegrini whose contract is up next season.

I'm personally waiting for MD to report "Sergi Roberto is our new midfield signing" near the end of the window.

Not only that. Sergi will be both our new midfield AND right back signing this season. Good times..

Sport claiming that Barca are after and experienced No9 happy to be on bench.

If that is true the club is an utter shambles and Laporta looks more clueless by the day.

That is literally why Aguero was bought.

FFS he will be a starter, won't he

Definitely need to improve midfield.

Pedri is still young and learning and Busquets cant run and is a liability defensively. After that there is Puig.. and Ilaix who himself is still raw and learning.

Same issues will persist as have had for years if dont address it.

If sign Depay and Fati comes back the attacking side of team is by far strongest area of squad.

We need a strong, physical midfielder who can put in a good defensive shift. To me Kessie makes all the sense in the world. His all round game is great. Strong defensively, good passer, scores goals, good technique and physicality strong. I'm surprised PSG or another big club haven't bought him.
Busquets is finished, Koeman doesn't rate Puig, Pedri and Ilaix are still raw. Only De Jong is close to the finished product.

Barcelona 'put 18 players up for sale to clear 862m debt' leaving five untouchable stars. Daily Express
Lionel Messi,, Ronald Araujo, Ansu Fati, Pedri and Frenkie de Jong are considered untouchable.
