The summer before he had been a CB for a few months and probably not requested by the manager at that point.

I think it was during the winter break 1.5 years before when we actually signed him. He was available for like 8 mil and 28 years old, then we pass or wait and still sign him at 30 for 20 mil.

Mathieu already paid off the transfer fee for his two crucial goals in the Classico and vs Celta alone a season ago.

and he has been rock solid signing for us.

I mean sure he isn't very good at Being a LB anymore but as a CB he's been great as a Rotational option for Masche when he needs rest.

Barca were linked that summer to him after he had played CB for a few months but he was further down the list of CBs and seen more as a punt for a low price.

He signed a new contract than wait for Barca to make their way down list to him.

The next summer he had been a year and a half at CB and specifically requested by Lucho.

Not too much to blame Zubi for there and not as clear cut as just paying a lot more for the same player at an older age.

Two Crucial goals that helped us get the La Liga and overall being a solid 3rd Choice CB for me it has been worth the money we have payed for IMO. I mean sure his age isn't ideal but it really hasn't affected him to much when he plays at CB.

Could be worse I mean we spent a lot of money on Dross over the years and Mathieu doesn't remotely fit in That category.

But do you honestly believe two goals is enough to defend paying such a price? I see this over and over with various purchases. Whenever someone scores a goal or makes a save, tens of millions of euros is suddenly worth it.

Keep in mind, Mathieu can easily make a mistake again, and people will be all over him. Vermaelen was worth it a few months ago when he had a few good performances. Now he is not worth it. But could be worth it again if he scores a goal.

Getting Mathieu for 20 million wasn't the biggest mistake we did that summer. If anything we made the mistake in trying to chase Marquinhos again and like always PSG told us to go away.

So we ended up playing 15 Million for Verm who had already been injured from the WC and he ended up spending almost the whole season Recovering from his surgery to fix the issue he had. It was clear Lucho wanted Mathieu and he also wanted Marquinhos as well.

It wasn't a mistake getting Mathieu, as Lucho wanted him. we can debate his transfer fee all we want but the real mistake not Finding an young alternative CB to Marquinhos that summer. So instead we are doing that this summer.

and another mistake we also made that summer was not putting any real effort into finding a true RB backup to Alves. I mean I like Douglas but it's obvious he isn't good enough to remotely play for a team our Caliber.

That being said, we shouldn't be surprised if we go for Mertesacker this summer.

We were in terrible spot, because the transfer ban. It's not like we had a lot of great options and time. We had to get someone, that's why we got Mathieu and Vermaelen, but things are getting better now. We can most likely upgrade one of them next summer, hopefully..
