We were in terrible spot, because the transfer ban. It's not like we had a lot of great options and time. We had to get someone, that's why we got Mathieu and Vermaelen, but things are getting better now. We can most likely upgrade one of them next summer, hopefully..

I dont like that excuse. Valencia replaced Mathieu with Mustafi who they paid 8m for.

I do agree that he wasnt the biggest mistake, but the prices we pay are outrageous (and we give away almost all our players for free).

That being said, we shouldn't be surprised if we go for Mertesacker this summer.

We usually pay players to leave. The best was paying Xavi 10 million to leave his contract a year early when we were in a transfer ban when we didn't want him to go and he was going to Qatar. They should have paid us a few million, or Xavi should have written off his contract if he wanted to go.

It's a shambles.

I like Penaranda. He's worth to keep an eye on.

We are not in the position of spoiled oil clubs and we need to adapt. I think our management is waking up to this fact. Its scary to think that we only have 60m euros to spend this summer according to reports. Pogba is likely to cost €200m so people need to wake up. Replacing Messi and Suarez is likely to cost close to €1 billion in a few years.

We'll replace Suarez just fine when the time will come. Maybe even Munir (after he comes back from loan) or Lee could replace him in the future "for free". And we can't replace Messi even with €2 billion.

Other than that we are pretty set at other positions or will be after we bring younger CB and probably LB in the summer. We have young GK, we bring in Vidal last year, we have young midfielders like Roberto, Rafinha and Denis Suarez and we have Neymar. I'm not worried about the future even if we don't buy some younger players (which we will).

I also don't think it makes sense to sign a young forward to root on the bench behind MSN. Whoever comes here won't play much and young players need to play to develop. That's one of the reasons why Lucho prefers experienced player to backup MSN.

I heard John Terry is available :mou:

I prefer him to Mertesacker or anyone else from Arsenal.

And to be clear, I don't want Terry.

According to Francis Aguilar (MD) Laporte,Stones,Ramiro Funes Mori,Marquinhos are our main CB options. But the way it sounded like is Laporte would be cheaper to buy than Stones and Barcelona and Lucho see Laporte as a potential replacement for Puyol.

Getting Mathieu for 20 million wasn't the biggest mistake we did that summer. If anything we made the mistake in trying to chase Marquinhos again and like always PSG told us to go away.

So we ended up playing 15 Million for Verm who had already been injured from the WC and he ended up spending almost the whole season Recovering from his surgery to fix the issue he had. It was clear Lucho wanted Mathieu and he also wanted Marquinhos as well.

It wasn't a mistake getting Mathieu, as Lucho wanted him. we can debate his transfer fee all we want but the real mistake not Finding an young alternative CB to Marquinhos that summer. So instead we are doing that this summer.

and another mistake we also made that summer was not putting any real effort into finding a true RB backup to Alves. I mean I like Douglas but it's obvious he isn't good enough to remotely play for a team our Caliber.

We could have got John Stones instead of Vermaelan and Matheau and saved about £10 million at the same time ...

Surely we are still not chasing bladdy Marquinhos !!!

He makes loads of mistakes , time after time when I've seen him play ...

I'd break the bank and get John Stones pronto he'd be our rock at the back for ten years ...

The irony here is mind-boggling.

Yup, paying 50M plus for Stones who is so brilliant that he's been benched at mighty Everton seems like the prudent thing to do here.

I doubt it's a coincidence that we're suddenly being linked with Funes Mori who's currently keeping Stones out of the lineup.

Laporte is a bullet we should dodge since he's been quite inconsistent this season, costs a lot, and is incredibly overrated despite of having a lot of La Liga experience now and performing at a great level at times and showed a lot of promise.

While Stones is someone we should sign since he plays in the English Premier League, can't speak Spanish, has played very well one season and been very inconsistent this one, and costs more than Laporte and Marquinhos.

Shouldn't try to sign Marquinhos since PSG won't sell him.

At least I can get people not wanting to sign Laporte due to his price and inconsistencies, but to join the Stones bandwagon while he's just the same and is even a worse option is a bit funny

Spot on. This is some of the more absurd reasoning being thrown around in here every now and then.
