The 2008-09 Squad had the perfect balance of Youth, Experience, Physicality, Speed, Mobility, Leadership, Skill, Desire, whatever you wanted in a squad, this had it. Then for some reason around 2010 we decided to move away from that and lean towards small, diminutive, technical players and it almost became a contest of how many players we could field under 6ft and under 75kgs.
2008-09 SQUAD
1 GK V. Valdés
2 DF M. Cáceres
3 DF Piqué
4 DF Márquez
5 DF Puyol (captain)
6 MF Xavi
7 FW Gudjohnsen
8 MF A. Iniesta
9 FW Eto'o
10 FW Messi
11 FW Bojan
13 GK Pinto
14 FW Henry
15 MF Keita
16 DF Sylvinho
18 DF Milito
20 DF Dani Alves
21 MF Hleb
22 DF Abidal
24 MF Touré Yaya
25 GK Jorquera
27 FW Pedro
28 MF Busquets
29 DF V. Sánchez
The reason it worked at the time was because those players: Xavi, Iniesta, Messi etc just happened to all be at their peak, playing under a world class coach and had unquestionable motivation to become the best. Now things have changed, and we need to adjust with it.
Thanks.
But this was personally my favorite Barca ever, because they brought us CL in 2006, after 14 Seasons of extremely sad years, especially when Real was winning in 98-00-02'
Barca 2005-06':
1 GK Víctor Valdés
2 DF Juliano Belletti
3 MF Thiago Motta
4 DF Rafael Márquez
5 DF Carles Puyol (captain)
6 MF Xavi
7 FW Henrik Larsson
8 MF Ludovic Giuly
9 FW Samuel Eto'o
10 MF Ronaldinho
11 FW Maxi López
12 DF Giovanni van Bronckhorst
14 FW Santiago Ezquerro
15 DF Edmílson
16 DF Sylvinho
17 MF Mark van Bommel
18 MF Gabri García
19 FW Lionel Messi
20 MF Deco
23 DF Oleguer Presas
24 MF Andrés Iniesta
Tall/strong/muscle players:
-- defense:
-- Puyol 178+muscles
-- Marquez 183+muscles
-- Oleguer 187+muscles
-- Edmilson (CB and Dmc) 186+muscles
-- Belletti 179
-- Van Bronckhorst 178
-- Sylvinho 173
-- Gabri 175
Midfield:
-- Dmc Marquez 183+Muscles
-- Dmc Edmilson 186+muscles
-- Mc Van Bommel 187+muscles
-- Dmc Motta 187+muscles
-- Xavi 170
-- Deco 174
Attack:
-- Ronaldinho 181+pace, strength, muscles, everything
-- Eto'o 179+pace, strength, muscles, everything
-- Larsson 175 (but awesome in the air)
-- Maxi Lopez 185+muscles
-- Guily 164
-- Messi 169
Defense:
-- then: all players were reasonably tall (Puyol 178, Marquez 183, Edmilson 186, Oleguer 187, and even our fullbacks Bronckhorst 178 and Belletti 179)
-- we were good, fast, strong both on the ground and in the air
-- today: only Pique can jump today
-- Mascherano is not a Dc, Bartra is 5 times worse than any defender from 2006
-- Alves is not a defender at all anymore. Alba is good, but short again
-- our defense is both poor on the ground and in the air
Midfield:
-- 2006: we could have played with muscles when needed (for example Xavi/Deco+Edmilson+Van Bommel)
-- we played a lot with 2 strong and 1 small midfielder
-- if we wanted we could have played with 2 small players (Xavi+Deco) and one stronger Edmilson/Motta/Marquez/Van Bommel
-- but also, if needed, we could have played with defensive and extremely strong and tall midfield, for example Edmilson+Motta+Van Bommel (try to push those 3 guys in every tackle if possible..)
-- also, if needed, we could have played with 3 small players in Deco+Xavi+Iniesta if needed
-- today: small, small, small and no option B
Attack:
-- 2006: the same story
-- Ronnie, Etoo and Guily, and Messi enters in every match
-- also, if you need somoene for more crosses, King Henrik Larsson is there
-- but still, Ronnie and Eto'o could scored with headers also
We had 1000s of options back then. Smaller players in the midfield or 3 strong players in the midfield.
Faster attack or strong and tall attack.
Plus, defense was very strong and tall.
Pep probably ruined our team. He won titles, but totally ruined our balance with forcing only small players.
We are a crap currently and don't have any options but to play small defenders, small midfielders and small attackers.
For those fans who say that we don't need a Fc, I would give Pedro, Neymar and Alexis just to have one Henrik Larsson back in the team.
That was a player who needed 2 shots for 1 Goal, and not 20 shots for 1 goal like Pedro, Ney and Alexis.
One clip of one of the best strikers ever in modern football, King Larsson:
The video is a bad quality, and it is from his Celtic times, but it is worth to watch.
Now imagine to have a player like him today. He scored 1000s of Goals in whatever way you needed. We would win against any bus in the world..
