Man utd without ronaldo does not equal chelsea. Sid lowe made a great comment the other week that man utd are more defensive than they realise. However they organise theirselves to defend and make use of the ball when they have it. Chelsea seem to organise themselves to defend and punt the ball upfield an if they get a lucky break then great. If not then they defend again. I watched chelsea alot under mourinho (i enjoyed watching the organisation of his team) and ive watched them a fair amount under scolari and hiddink. And not much has changed. However man utd on the other hand have evolved alot. They are definitely the one team in the league that balance defence and attack. Perhaps not in europe, but in the epl they can defend well, but they can also turn it on and completely demolish teams. Its why they've won three straight titles. U do not know which man utd will turn up. And their defence is too good for most teams, and so is their attack.
even though i agree with sid lowe,i think
we do realise that ,not so much we're defensive, more that we've got a bunch of players who're prepared to do the things that lots of people might think they'd not be inclined to do,but they do for the good of the team, and it's chances.
isn't it earn the right to play by doing the ugly things too??
they also can,as you said,be flexible enough and/or good enough to go to the san siro and absolutely dominate inter and make a decent arsenal team look like "babies",to quote pat evra.(and that inter game........if we'd got 3 or 4 there it wouldn't have been an unfair reflection, and imo it was our best away performance in the cl since we beat a very very good deportivo 2-0)
i don't know if we will or
should go toe to toe, hagler v hearns style with barca but i'd love to see it.
tbh i'm not expecting it,but i'm also not expecting us to deliberately play defensively either, because we just don't do that.
if barca keep the ball and press well enough to get it back quickly, then we're gonna
have to defend and play counter attack, but if we play at our best, where virtually 5 of the front 6 are interchanging all the time, then it could be a brazil - italy 2-3 (1982) style goalfest, but without the veiny arms.
something a bit like this would do nicely next week please.
