Champions League

It's still top football, but only from quarters up. Basically you have 5-6 games of real top quality. Teams don't go very hard in groups.

CL in mid 00s with R10 Barca, Milan, Chelsea, United, Pool, and Arsenal with occasional appearances from Juve and Inter was really, really good.

Late 00s to mid 10s had 4 super teams: Pep's Barca, RM, Bayern, and MSN Barca.

City and PSG supposed to be top 3-5 sides in world football and they looked mostly meh. Even if group game.

The LL slump is temporary. Mostly has to do with Madrid being quiet in the transfer window for 2 years and us rebuilding. Atletico are Atletico, won't be surprised if they finally manage to go far in the CL this season. Stop announcing the doom of La Liga

Folk look back with rose tinted glasses.

That Liverpool side that won it with Dudek, Djimi Traore, Steve Finnan, Luis Garcia, Baros, Kewell, Smicer etc.

That type of team would get nowhere near CL semis let alone win it these days.

 They are better than the Tottenham team that made the CL final 2 years ago.

Pool had the likes of Gerrard, Alonso, Masche, Torres, Kuyt and co.

Far better upper end talent than what Tottenham had too.

Masche, Torres and Kuyt never won the CL with Liverpool and Kuyt was nothing great anyway.

They one time they won it they have a heap of average players that are miles off it from top teams now.

We should go for a sneaky Isak buy while everyone will be trying to sign Haaland if it turns out his and Raiola's demands are too extreme.

Isak has 90m euro release clause after just 1 good season

He's nowhere good enough for clubs with aspirations of winning league and/or UCLs

Honestly, I compared the starting 11s of 2005 and 2007 Lpool sides and I easily prefer the 2005 attack. Garcia, Baros and Kewell (and Gerrard) > Pennant (lol), Zenden (lol) and Kuyt (and Gerrard). So yeah, I take my words back. 2 quite poor teams attack-wise really.

2005 Liverpool side was a team full of character and resilience. Very good cup side with several leaders who never gave up. They knocked out one of the best Chelsea sides of the last 20 years, that received 15 goals in 38 PL games and finished with 95 points.

Liverpool's road to the final was Juventus, Chelsea, Milan. All tough ties. Both Milan and Juve played a CL final just 1 year before. A really nice underdog story. Not unlike Chelsea of the recent season. They faced much stronger opponents though.

Imo, and this is not nostalgia, the level in CL is dropping. The competition doesn't feel as special as before, and in my mind, the Premier League is becoming the no1 competition to watch atm.
