My guess would be to help the CBs out with the ball. Umtiti's passing is usually fine, but Araujo is a weak link.

Agree it does lots of harm in the middle of the pitch.

I guess this is the reasoning, but the flank central defenders only get to see more of the ball, with less options.
Especially with ter Stegen in the goal, they should always be able to return the ball to him if they come in trouble.
