Well, unlike the internet keyboard warriors from here, at least I'm consistent, even though I barely posted on this forum in the past 11 years.

Here's a message after the 2016 Portugal win:

And let's be serious... if Messi would have exited the field in the 25th minute in the World Cup Final and Argentina would have won with a late goal, nobody here would claim that Messi shouldn't be considered as a winner of the competition. You played in all matches, you're a winner.

Consistency is a good trait to have, at least on the internet where most people are full of s***.

Depends on what you're trying to prove really. I've seen people claim it's clear Ronaldo's the better player since he's got an international trophy to his name. I think arguments like that are rubbish because he barely played in the final. Would say the same if Argentina won the World Cup with Leo on the bench. Regarding their international careers, though? That trophy does give Ronaldo an edge over Messi, although I don't think either of them had a great NT career. Ronaldo's also got that record (or he will sooner rather than later). Doesn't mean all that much, but adds to the resume.

There's also this phenomenon where it's become a trend to shit on Messi for everything. One can't even say, as an opinion, that he's had an above average NT career and been a little better than CR7 at the NT level without hipsters losing their shit and devolving into a mess where they don't actually argue the point.

Here's Messi's flaws:

1) Makes way too much money. He was underpaid in his prime and now he's grossly overpaid. I've voiced my issues about this before Rassvet knows.
2) He had a few CL KO games where he didn't try. Roma, AM 13/14, and AM 15/16. Maybe Bayern 19/20.

But let's not kill the guy over everything and make it seem like defending Messi on a Barcelona forum is being a cultist.

Show me someone who was hostile to you because you said you put Messi's career above Ronaldo's. We had talked about it a few days ago and I had explained my point of view to you argumentatively, why I think that both should be mentioned on the same level. You always tell yourself things that are not true. If we are on negative points of a player:
Ronaldo was also scrap against Porto, 17/18 in the semi-finals against Bayern and later against Liverpool nothing was to be seen either, nobody knows why he shoots free kicks, he just can't anymore. I have no problem criticizing Ronaldo when it is appropriate, but for the future be more relaxed if someone has an opinion that does not match yours and take it apart with meaningful arguments instead of insulting them

Hating on Messi has become a thing, especially around Barcaforum which makes it worse. Might be due to our undercover agent working overtime when not on a break (not often these days).

Anyway, back to the topic at hand. Messi actually has an above-average international career. Has a World Cup final and two Copa finals to his name. With a team which was never a world-beater. Before the 2016 Euros Portugal won, Ronaldo was far beyond Messi on the international front. For me, the trophy has special weight and puts Ronaldo slightly ahead, but neither opinion is drastic nor controversial. If Messi manages to win this edition of Copa, he'll cement his place as a more successful NT player. IMO.

The problem with this topic is that international football was more valorized back in Maradona's and Pele's (and other goat's) times. Messi and Ronaldo don't come close to their successes but have other cards to show.
