The consistency of Messi and CR is incredible. Many players have a couple of strong seasons when it comes to numbers, some will have more but anyone who wants to come close to these two pretty much has to start off his career with these numbers and then don't fall off until mid 30s. So pretty much start things like Haaland and then keep that level for 10 years.

That's a lot to ask for, even with more and more advanced training, diet, big teams dominating etc.

Just as an example, Lewandowski in all club competitions scored 459 goals in 630 games (0.73 goals/game), Messi 672 goals in 778 games (0.86), CR 674 goals in 894 games (0.75).

And Lewy is already one of the best goal scorers ever and his quote is sort of competitive but he's still more than 200 behind in total numbers and almost 33 himself.

The longevity of both is on GOAT level, we will rarely see players with such a constancy

Not only goat level, they are the goats in that regard. We've never seen such thing before. Some of it has to do with the way modern sport is these days, but that takes nothing away from them.

Both Messi and Ronaldo, who is more outspoken for it, are inspiring figures.

People admire Messi's longevity yet still think him doesn't need hard work. He is pure genius plus very very hard worker.

Fits the talent vs hard work narrative better.
People like to think of Messi as this guy who shows up on his slippers, t-shirt, sunglasses on drinking peosi scoring a hattrick when he feels like vs Ronaldo as this Patrick Bateman charachter who would play at stoke if not for that drive.
In reality Messi works way harder than people think and Cr7 is way more talented than given credit for as well.

I remember reading people saying they saw or knew CR7 back at academy level. That wasn't really special or stuck out at the beginning of his career. Many people believe Ronaldo taught his skills through repetition and practice rather than it coming naturally to him.

I guess it's how you look at talent and those who pick up things easily versus those who have to work at it to get it.

Ronaldo is still very talented though. There probably exists players out there that trained harder than him and would never get close to his level.
In general most players need to work their ass off to make it. Then, the players that do and will only make it are the ones with the talent as well.

Honestly if you talk about technically gifted then there are plenty player above Ronaldo. Cassano for example...
Ronaldo not only work hard, but he also works smart and he does have IQ for football. He is a tap in merchant but that requires a lot of offense awarness.

He was definitely looked at as a big talent back in the day, not without reason Ferguson picked him up after watching him for just one game.

But he wasn't a teenage wonderboy like R9 or Messi either, dont know where to put him, really.
