Think they could've had they succumbed to the release clause that the Haaland's and Mino wanted to include.

that was a couple of years before the Ronaldo to city links though, which is what was referenced.
At the particular time(dortmund to new club) United were definitely not in the running.

Man Utd wanted Haaland like everyone else did. He was never going to consider it with or without Ronaldo there that was the issue.

So should have just kept up pretense IMO if others were better positioned anyway
When you think about Alfie doing rounds undecided until the time Benzema renewed his deal, there's no reason to think he'd not listen to a pitch that included a new manager, a bucket of money in summer 22 to spend on new teammates to accompany Erling
At the very least that taking place would create positive buzz and help them in the long run instead of this rotten atmosphere that accompanied the cult of Ronaldo where everyone is accountable for club's failed season, except for him

It was reported they wanted him and Ole tried for years.. it became a non story when it was clear was not remotely possible.

Those rounds were done before Ronaldo signed for United anyway so it is not relevant to Ronaldo case as United were not really in for him until they thought he may sign for City.

When doing those rounds Man Utd were mentioned as one of those that wanted to speak with them anyway. Supposedly met them all in London.

Was reported Alfie was going to City games in winter 2022 where absolutely would have been approached about any updates and would plausibly be expected he was in contact with RM until the end
If United was in the rumor mill at the time would have only helped the club going forward

He was a City player by winter 2022 and before that Man utd were out the picture more or less despite doing what they could to sign him.

What you expect them to do? Keep calling media and claiming Haaland wants to go there?

United were in rumour mill for long time as were many others.. none of them benefitted from that.

Ronaldo signing had no impact on it. What benefit did it have on club in 2021 speaking with his father? None at all.

Personal terms not been agreed till April on last reports I've seen

Ronaldo signing did impact possibility. Could have U-turned on release clause that was a stumbling block anytime but chose not to
United not in serious rumor mill after that at all considering CR signed on for 2 years. Couldn't expect both to be compatible.

By winter 2022 he was at City.

Ronaldo signing didnt impact anything in relation to Haaland.

He was never going to United and there is not some huge benefit in having name linked either when everyone involved knows it isnt happening with options he had.

The reason his father was visiting City more and more rather than other clubs by winter last year is because that was emerging as his no1 option and many others had been dismissed.

United would have released Ronaldo in a heartbeat if thought had any chance of Haaland. They would have chose Haaland at no9 every single time even if both in squad. It is a none issue.

'Ronaldo stopped any chance of Haaland' is a bizarre claim.

Nothing about him being at City in winter, only April 22 when became clear RM are full course on Mbappe and Benzema renewed

Indeed makes sense Alfie was visiting more and more since winter because United were out the running as said no to release clause initially, then signed on Ronaldo which showed then manager chooses to sign an old striker instead of waiting.
If U-turned on release clause would have made negotiations easier too.
If not for signing Ronaldo could have kept up pretense which would help generate further interest and any rumor subsequent to signing CR is useless considering they're incompatible.

It's hard to understand why you hyperfocus on irrelevant figures of speech JamDav1982 when couldnt be more clear from conversation what is meant by 'winter 2022' in context of Haaland transfer to City negotiations. Don't think anybody but you would get confused by that and choose to use it as a bad faith debate gotcha. Relax mate. Winter 2021. Happy?

United did lose out on any remaining chance on Haaland by signing CR as could have had possibility of U-turning on club policy on release clauses to entice Haaland further.
If Ronaldo wasn't there, OGS still at club, they did like you would have expected them to based on 20/21 and kept up close to top4 playing decent football AND showed willingness to give ground to Haaland side in negotiations, no reason to believe they would not be in the running for longer.
Instead they chose to commit to an old legend and pretty much admit defeat as would never release Ronaldo to make room for someone else.
Ronaldo in place removes any chance for correct team building around Haaland at 9 as would complain and interfere like he is now, which is a situation in which Haaland wouldnt want to put in as a player that wants to grow and learn rather than be point of contention for his idol who occupies same spot on the pitch.

Don't know what you mean by 'realistic destination'.
On that basis they were never realistic destination even more so pre-summer 21 so Haaland camp would still talk to 'unrealistic suitors' to see what is offered? Nah
Can always make self more attractive to a Haaland type player when everyone knows they're currently building to something. Could play negotiation cards like 'you get to beat City rather than be a pawn in Pep grand plan' etc
Even more so when have 1 year left to show why you're worth being considered also considering Pep always preferred Kane

The thing is, that if he went to City, the situation would be the same or worse, since Pep doesn't take shit from players. This is probably a desperate search for the way out of United (breach of contract and sacking) and probably signing for Sporting in the winter.

United werre never a realistic destination for Haaland with or without Ronaldo there.

There is no real benefit to keeping up some 'pretence' that they were.

Bizarre claim.. Ronaldo stopped any chance of Haaland or any 'pretence' it may happen.

Man Utd would have dropped Ronaldo in a second for Haaland and would have told him that. It made no difference either way and if anything getting to be in squad with his idol could be seen to be a positive.

This idea that Man U would have been an option if not City doesnt add up either. Many ahead of Man U in that list.

Barca were never a realistic option either and his father visited there and despite this idea some put out that he wanted to join.. those rumours never benefitted Barca just like they never benefitted Man U when linked before Ronaldo signed.

Anyone who knows how his agents works knows he visits about any big club interested and puts their financial offers on a plate. Raiola does it all the time.

If Man U fans made that claim they would rughtfully be getting clowned for it.

Bizarre.
