Cristiano Ronaldo - v1

I honestly don't know why you say he has more to his game, his long distance shooting is completely gone, just look at how many shots he takes and the poor percentage of actually converting them, lets not even mention his inability to beat players now, or his freekicks. He basically lives inside the area looking for the final pass imo. Dude has decline too much to even be compared to Messi, hell its an insult tbh

From the top of my head, he has like 5 or 6 goals from outside the box this season (this includes 2 free kicks) & has the most assists for RMA in all competitions. Yes, he thrives from the service of his teammates more than ever but that is natural as no one can be beat father time.

Common, we all know Ronaldo is shite at shooting from distance these days, especially free kicks. Still a world class player though, but seriously, he should be no where near the free kicks.

He isn't a pure #9 though is he? A pure #9 is someone like Higuain, Giroud, Gomez, Aduriz or Klose and he has FAR more to his game even at this advanced stage of his career than any of those players have ever had. Even in a declined state, he offers more to his team than most players and more than what people on this forum are giving him credit for. Even the supposed tap-ins and penalties he always scores is somehwat exaggerated and you only need to watch his top 10 goals in la liga alone this season to see this. So much variety in the goals.

And yes portugal's success was mostly due to their defensive approach but to say that he "he was far from the most decisive player for Portugal" is nonsensical as he literally saved them from elimination in the last group game with 2 goals and an assist in a 3-3 draw with Hungary whilst in the next round against Croatia was involved in the game winning goal. In addition to that, he acted as a great leader and put confidence in his teammates against Poland in the crucial penalty shoot-out and even went first and scored. Not to mention, he scored the opening goal in the semis and inadvertently assisted Nani for the 2nd to seal the game. Yes, I agree Pepe was overall the best player but that's a lot for someone who was "far from being decisive."

Messi and Argentina had a much easier route to the copa america final (even playing less games): facing minnows such as Panama and Bolivia in the group stage and Venezuela and USA in the KO rounds before meeting Chile in the final.

Virtually, every team CR and Portugal faced in the KO rounds were considerably stronger than any team Argentina played in the copa america barring Chile and this is with Portugal having a less talented team.
Portugal played tougher opponents than Argentina , but Penaldo was shit in their 4 outings out of 6 . Even Nani scored as much as him . And don't even dare to talk about 2 Assist's , such stupidity that his Squandered chance against Croatia and mistimed shot against Wales are considered as assist and mentioned along with , what Messi delivered to Higuen on a plate vs venezuela . You said Usa are weak? Hell i agree , they knocked out Euro Champions out of last world cup . And wales with out Ben Davies and Ramsey are as shit as it gets . . If Penaldo was good as you are trying to make him, he would have delivered against Austria and Iceland which would have made Hungary game with a fatty Goal keeper , less decisive.. And about giving confidence to take shoot outs and shouting ,jumping and showboating near sidelines these are plain arguments to cover up his poor Euro campaign .. Portugal has a less talented team ? agree mate , Renato sanches (35 M worth) , Andre Gomes (35M) , Nani , Pepe, William Carvalho , joa mario, Quaresma , Moutinho , Fonte are useless players and won a Euro final with out the flop of the tournament Penaldo .

he takes way too many shots so he better make a few at least, can't remember the last time he scored one actually, he was the player with the most shots in this euro and how many did he convert? 2 or 3 freekicks scored aren't enough for how many he takes..

In the air he might be the best in the world though, and as long as he keeps his hunger for goals he will keep scoring them but most of them will be scored thanks to a final receiving pass from a teammate.

2 free kick's - one against Malmao a team that last played a competitive game on oct 2015 before facing Real , and another Fk was against Wolfsburg when their stupid defender moved away instead of blocking it. Out of his goal's that were scored from outside the box , let's take a close look , 1) vs Lavente in Bernabue ( Madrid Leading ) , 1 vs Bilbao in Bernabue (,Madrid leading) , and one vs Asspanyol in Bernabue . 1 vs Celta vigo in Bernabue ( very good goal and gave them lead ) .. Apart from that any decisive goal ? let me know if i missed any ?

Maybe you were watching RM and Ronaldo blind folded this season so lets break it down.

In the opening game of the group stage, he scored a hat-trick in a 3-0 home win against Shaktar = 3points won for his team. In the very next CL game he scored 2 goals in an away 2-0 win against Malmo = another 3 points he won for his team (6 in total). The 2 games after that were a 0-0 draw and 1-0 win against PSG where he didn't contribute to the scoreline. The game after that was 4-3 away win against shaktar where he score 2 and assisted 2 so therefore essentially won another 3 points for his team and 9 out of the total 14 points they had at this stage. In the final group game he scored 4 goals and made 1 assist in an 8-0 home win against Malmo. Granted, this game was a blow-out by Madrid so they would have probably won this one without him. However, that doesn't detract from the fact that he helped them amass 12 points out of a total 17 at this point and 9 points almost single-handedly. So it's very plausible to say that they wouldn't have won the group without him.

Now onto the knockout stage, he scored the always crucial opening goal against Roma that also happened to be an away goal. In the return leg he also opened the scoring and assisted the only other goal in a close 2-0 win where Roma were missing chance after chance on the other end of the pitch.

Moving onto the Quarter finals, he scored the all important hat-trick in the 2nd leg against Wolfsburg that cancelled and reversed the 2-0 defeat his team succumbed to in the first leg when other players went into hiding.

In the semi-finals, he didn't play the first leg because of injury and visibly wasn't 100% in the return leg despite opting to play the full 90% in a narrow 1-0 win. Onto the final, he again struggled and was underwhelming but still scored THAT all important winning penalty.

Over the course of the entire CL campaign he scored 16 goals and assisted a further 4 which accounts for 70% of RMA's TOTAL goal output in the competition.

In the same time frame, Gareth Bale missed the games against Malmo (home & away), PSG (home & away); Roma (home & away), Shaktar (most of the home game as he came off injured). So almost contributed nothing in the entire CL campaign up until he was fit and lively in the semis and final.

Overall this CL season Bale registered 0 goals in 8 appearances yet somehow he was "as important or even more important than CR" lmao. Bale was bound to be lively in the last couple of games as he was fresh having been injured for pretty much the entire season. Madrid made it to that advanced stage without him.

You can argue Modric was important but in the grand scheme of things not as important as CR was. I could do the same breakdown for the euros but it would take me hours. You're just allowing your loathe for CR to cloud your judgement or you really just have no clue. You would think he was Arbeloa with the way people post here.

I think Ronaldo is being underrated to the point where 36 league goals in 35 games - helping his team to within one point of the league in a season where EVERY other attacker on his team was being injured for lengthy periods of time is no longer good enough.

Or scoring 16 goals in a single CL campaign (no other player to ever do this apart from a younger version of himself 2 years ago) is no longer a big deal.
Very Good analysis ,making Wolfsburg , Roma , Shakthar and Malmao look's like Bayern , Jve , Psg  . Suarez would have ripped apart shitty , Wolfsburg , and other little pussy's that Ronaldo butchered in this year's Ucl . Not to Mention Man City , Psg against which Messi was having fun... Had Penaldo played Altetico in a two legged tie ,it would have been end of the road for him in Ucl . So cut that crap of Ronaldo being savoir for Madrid. . Put any one as the target man in Madrid they can do much better ( Rm in late 90's with Raul )

- Suarez had a better year in La Liga stats, not NT or CL stats wise in comparison with Cristiano.
- Messi didnt reach UCL finals and lost another final with NT, CR7 won Euro and CL in comparison.

It is very easy mathematics guys, if you want to approach the Bdor in any other subjective way, you are doing it wrong.
It is and will always be about personal & team achievements in a yearly period.

The Pepe argument fails because of CR7 last CL stats, the group stage match which he saved Portugal and Euro semifinals alone.

The conditions in which the players achieved their award is irrelevant (you can have a whole subforum whining about it, it doesn't matter), the Bdor comittee has 0 fucks about your recognition context. Bdor is granted to the best player in a yearly context, measured by objective criteria (awards, cups, titles, etc.).

End of story.

i dont like it, of course, but i have to agree. i love messi as much as the next cule, but it wouldnt sit well with me if leo won it this year (he wont) simply because his end products, while phenomenal, are not the best in the past year. there is nothing wrong with ronaldo winning it, given what he won and that he had a hand in those victories.

For all the pain it would cause, him winning the Balon d'Or this year would be much more deserving than the one he won in 2013, so take a chill pill and wait for that to actually spur our Leo and motivate him further to try and win another one of those!

maybe compared to his 2013 win, but of course his competition is CR, not his former self. and im not convinced messi did more this year to win it over the latter. i also dont think that makes him the lesser player (duh), but it is a calendar-based award so, like Observer said, the criteria is performance + achievements in the preceding calendar year.

what really irks me is how, when Messi has a better season trophy-wise, the leading reason given as to why he should win the ballon is his titles. when CR outdoes him in trophies (which happened only in 2014 and 2016) then, suddenly, silverware is less important. that's inconsistent and in a sense, even dishonest.

all else being equal messi is obviously above ronaldo. but all else is not equal in football: individual performances plus achievements both play a role.

That if the award was actually given based on player's performances, not reputation. If france won the euros, would griezmann be the favorite? I don't think he would, even being the best overall player there.
I don't think cr did enough to win it. His teams did. Just being part of the winning teams seem enough now, for either Messi or cr, and it shouldn't really be like that. I don't think Messi should win it either, fwiw. It's still unclear to me who should.
