He provided *both* assists today. Yes, sometimes his crosses are wasteful, and I'd like to see him shoot more often, but he's brilliant and plays an important part in Barça's game. He can play a close inside game expertly, when that's what's called for, but his main function is to provide width in the attack. Either someone has to mark him, or if they choose to park the bus with all defenders near the box, his job is to exploit that wing space, as he did today brilliantly.
He times his runs wonderfully. He waits for Xavi to get the ball in the midfield, and as soon as Xavi is facing his direction, he starts his movement, accelerating once Xavi is committed to the cross. His run for the first assist today was absolutey perfect, a lesson. Most wingers just hang out on the wing, staying behind the offside trap, waiting for the lofted cross, then take it down to the corner flag. Instead, Alves, out wide, sees the ball going to Xavi and starts to run directly *along* the line of the trap, building up speed. This gives Xavi an opportunity to spot Alves. As soon as Xavi kicks, Alves pushes off towards the goal. With the head of steam he's built up, he's well clear of the defenders when he receives the ball. Fantastic stuff.
