Goalkeepers do that to minimize the risk. If you get a pass there, usually no back pass can go in, no matter if the pitch or the pass is bad, the gk fails to control the ball etc.
In this case the keeper should have never passed to Alaba in the first place. Then both did what they are accustomed to. The keeper to make himself available besides the goal and Alaba to think he has Neuer behind him who is able to control any ball in any situation.
yeah, I played CB for some time and what I learned was that you always backpass to the goalposts (to the one where the keeper is of course) and never to the middle.
