Stupid comments from Pique like 'Only a few defenders can play in the Barca system' not only makes him (and by extension Barcelona) sound elitist but also puts Barca in a weak negotiating position.

It's irrelevant that what he says is actually true, he should just shut up.

Yeah, when you look at a history of his twitter (eg in May: http://web.archive.org/web/20130527142817/https://twitter.com/DavidLuiz_4), I can't see any link to Chelsea FC there either, it just says "Londen, UK", it still looks the same like now.

Luiz may not be a top-of-the-line defender, but he's still a better defender than any Barca defender... except Puyol, who's not there most of the time. There are no great defenders available, and we need an improvement. We've been needing an improvement for a few years now, but at this point, we are desparate for any improvement.

Yes, that is why. There are no good CBs available, and any CB that we decide to buy out, we'll have to pay huge amounts of money, because everybody knows that we are desperate and that we have money to pay. We will not get away with paying a decent sum for anyone except some completely uknown player outside of Europe. We could choose the most mediocre player we can find and he'll still cost us a fortune.
