I remember reading a rumor on barcastuff about borussia's Subotić being linked with Barça, instead of Hummels.

Every game it shows we really need reinforcements on defense... we are conceding too many easy goals.

I think it more has to do with the approach than the players actually. Ever since this damn 3-4-3 the team has the least of concerns about defending. A CB and a LB is needed in the summer but again I believe this change of system and approach was what fucked up Barca during this season, more than anything.

Please no, Hummels suits our game a lot more. Short passing, long balls, technique, capable of scoring goals... defensively Subotic is a tick ahead IMO, but I think he lacks ballhandling skills for a side like Barca.

Depth isn't the issue, at least not the main one. We need height and speed in the back. We are terribly vulnerable on counter attacks and set pieces for those reasons.

Its just mascherano dont start him and then we have a good defense but this collapse was coming if you watched the last classico in the cdr the performance wasnt that bad overall but to win a football match we need to take the chances.

And to be serious for a moment - while Nolan's sarcasm amuses me, I think Barcelona does need a very good centerback and probably also a fullback. Who is up to however much the club is willing to pay. The list of people I'd be looking at if I were in charge at Barca isn't very big and none of the players would come cheap.

That's part of the problem: there just aren't a whole lot of what I would consider truly world-class defenders these days. I started watching calcio in the days of Baresi and Maldini and I always use them (and the defense of Sacchi's Milan) as reference points. Very few of the current crop in any league come close to their standards.
Thiago Silva would probably come close but I can't see Milan letting him go (at least not for a whole lot of money, more than the 30 million they paid for Nesta). The Germans mentioned in this thread are good but are they at THAT level? IMO no. I have a massive crush on Javi Martinez and while he's done admirably as a CB this year, it's still not his natural position and I think he's better in midfield (and he has an obscenely high buyout clause as do the other Athletic players who I personally would prefer to all stay where they are). I can't think of anyone in England who really thrills me, though the guys at City can be good (but again, since one is team captain - I think - aren't likely to leave and won't come cheap). In Italy, the defenders are just not what they used to be. It's a pity that Bonucci and Ranocchia were split up as those two could have turned into something quite good. As it is, they've both floundered a bit.
So really at this point, nobody comes to mind. Cos I can't see Thiago Silva leaving Milan.

What about Chiellini? Especially as a defender who can play both LB and CB like Abidal.

Vidic if he becomes available or choose between Thiago Silva and Mats Hummels.We need a player who can dominate situations and is strong it doesn't matter if he is not the best passer some sacrifices have to be made.
