CM is his natural position. As for "elite" (I cringe at that word btw.)... What we really need in that position is waterboy for Messi. Unless you are Verratti there really isnt anyone out there who could do the job much better than in-form Rakitic.
I get what you say with cringing from the word elite, but I get cringes from the term "natural position" too, what is that anyway? half of our players played different positions in their career
From Messi who was striker then RW,then false 9 then RW again then basically AM right now,Iniesta who was at times AM,CM and their was times he was more useful as LW,or Xavi who played as DM then CM,same for Cesc,or Puyol who was once a winger IIRC then CB then RB then CB and the list goes on and on.
Roberto failed to make his mark as CM for long time, once he moved to DM and then to RB he improved a lot, there are some growing pains for RB position but I still prefer him than CM
Way too passive for me taste and can be invisible a lot of times, most of what is said about Gomes can be said about him too (except being slow). I would prefer him growing as RB which a position I think he has bigger chance to improve than being Messi waterboy. May be if we decide that Messi will be the AM and get someone for RW then it will be more acceptable for me so that he will be more of a DM,a position that fits him more IMHO
And anyway with crowded midfield I don't think this year it will logical to put him in midfield, may be we will see what happens with the squad next summer and if we get new coach or Lucho stays
