CM is his natural position. As for "elite" (I cringe at that word btw.)... What we really need in that position is waterboy for Messi. Unless you are Verratti there really isnt anyone out there who could do the job much better than in-form Rakitic.

I get what you say with cringing from the word elite, but I get cringes from the term "natural position" too, what is that anyway? half of our players played different positions in their career
From Messi who was striker then RW,then false 9 then RW again then basically AM right now,Iniesta who was at times AM,CM and their was times he was more useful as LW,or Xavi who played as DM then CM,same for Cesc,or Puyol who was once a winger IIRC then CB then RB then CB and the list goes on and on.

Roberto failed to make his mark as CM for long time, once he moved to DM and then to RB he improved a lot, there are some growing pains for RB position but I still prefer him than CM
Way too passive for me taste and can be invisible a lot of times, most of what is said about Gomes can be said about him too (except being slow). I would prefer him growing as RB which a position I think he has bigger chance to improve than being Messi waterboy. May be if we decide that Messi will be the AM and get someone for RW then it will be more acceptable for me so that he will be more of a DM,a position that fits him more IMHO

And anyway with crowded midfield I don't think this year it will logical to put him in midfield, may be we will see what happens with the squad next summer and if we get new coach or Lucho stays

Started out well, but turned to shit after 15-20 min. He just doesn't know what to do in these types of matches.

No one currently knows in our team. The entire team turns brainless when pressed like that, which is obviously Lucho's fault.

Yeah, he spent a lot of time on the far wing trying to send crosses in. Like, what kind of tactic even is that? It's the same whether we have Denis, Rakitic, or Gomes playing as our RCM.

Subbing him inw as a mistake. those are the games that somehow made clear to me he'll never be more than a squad player. It irks me to see him playing with the #6.

I agree, wrong game to play him, but Lucho is gonna Lucho...

Can't we just retire #6?

I don't think he'll ever reach top level as a player, but I do think we could sell him for a good price, say 25 million. He should go to teams like Leverkusen, Everton and Southampton, I think he would perform very well there.
With the money I feel Barça should invest in Bernardo Silva. Similar player with a much higher ceiling in my opinion.

He is good on the ball no question but missing so many aspect of a good midfielder. We have too many average midfielder like him, would sell next summer.

I've always been vocal about him not getting it as he's nothing like what a 6 at Barca should be, but Xavi spoke. I'd almost consider getting rid of him as more La Masia midfielders move up just because he's a squad player at best who's holding onto one of our most legendary numbers. *shrug*

No promissing midfielder is ever going to reach top level if he has to wait 3 games to play again like our maniac manager is doing. there is a reason why Fabregas (19) was better than iniesta (19), not because of talent ( which enormously favors Andres), but because Wenger used to play him everysingle game every single minute, even at such Young age. Thank god Iniesta was patient and stayed like a true cule.

Yeah, but we can't afford the luxury of playing Denis every single minute with the hope he turns into a great player some day for the simple reason that titles are expected right now...

well i understand, but this should have been done at the start of the season, there was no reason to stack one thousand midfielders in our squad, you have Rafinha,Denis,Sergio Roberto.. choose one of them, put faith in him and play him regularily. There is a very specific reason why Pep Guardiola always prefer smaller squads (i believe here he only had one substiture midfielder and that was Keita) .. even as a substitute, Keita played a lot because he was the ultimate replacement. Now we have a lot of midfielders, manager wants to make everyone happy , and the result is a psychotic rotation that hurt everybody and the team itself. Rakitic is a shadow of himself, Denis Rafinha are not motivated, because they know they are sitting in the bench the next game regardless of what they do. It's a mess. I don't beliveve Enrique is the right man for this job anymore.
