Diego Maradona

He had major demons and did some unspeakable things (especially in terms of domestic abuse etc), but speaking purely as a footballer, he's the only player I have ever seen who I'd say was as talented as Messi. The guy was an alien and if you ever play football, please watch him play on some videos about an hour before you play yourself (or another greatest of all time player, but especially him or Messi). It will make you play better yourself.

He's a figure of worship in Argentina. I don't like celebrity worship but for the figure he was during the days of the Falklands and what he represents for Argentina, it goes much deeper.

He's one of those who transcended football and had as much heart and spirit as he did ability. I only regret I am slightly too young to have seen his peak properly live.

Hugo Gatti (Boca Juniors goalkeeper) won’t forget November 9, 1980. It was the day Argentine football saw the real character of its shimmering new star for the very first time. The day when he made Diego Armando Maradona angry.
“There was an interview where Gatti was saying that I was a chubby boy, that I was not what people said I was,” recalled Diego.
On matchday, Maradona was woken up by his manager. “He came to my room and kept peppering me with this interview,” revealed the star. “He said, ‘Diego, what this keeper has been saying about you isn’t fair. It shows a complete lack of respect. You need to show what you’re capable of. You’re not a fat boy, are you?’ When I went onto the pitch, I was completely over the top.”
Gatti attempted a handshake at the coin toss, but Maradona ignored him……

Wherever you are, happy birthday Diego !

Forgot it was his birthday today. He'd have been 64.

He had many demons and lived a troubled life. He did bad things and hurt many people. But he lived with his heart on his sleeve and packed more into 60 years than many do if they live to 100.

As a footballer, he provided so much joy to us all. He was gifted with a talent that only comes along two or three times in 150 years. He was an alien of a footballer and if he was playing now (and not fucked on coke and was more professional) he would likely take the piss out of everyone.

Can't believe he's been gone almost four years.

Having watched extended videos and match replays of his 1986 WC campaign, I can safely say I have never seen a better player.

The highest peak ever. More naturally talented, influential and complete than the modern players he's compared to. Also had charisma, leadership and aura(the most overused word in today's football compilations; most of these players have zero aura) in spades.

He and Messi are impossible to split for me.

Maradona is more naturally gifted and complete. Messi is more efficient and consistent. Maradona was a drug addict lol.
Hmmmm.

I think they're both so insanely gifted that it's hard to really tell.

Maradona being on coke and turning up for games after a three day bender was a massive disadvantage, yes.

Maradona had an extra bit of flair. Could do tricks and flicks and entertain the crowd too. Better defensively and stronger in the air too. People turned up just to watch his warm-up routines dancing with the ball.

In Barca Forum terms, Fati is Messi, OG was Maradona.

I agree that Maradona showcased more flair, but I don't think Messi lacks that. I feel Messi's style is to do the simple, economical thing, rather than anything extravagant like Ronaldinho. I believe he can do it but chooses not to as he's more 'practical' so to speak. Of course Messi is still a very entertaining player, just different. You might disagree though and feel he's not capable of tricks and extravagance.

I don't know who OG is (though I have seen some of his posts and heard people mention him), but I guess you mean Fati is a gentle, harmless guy (or guy and player), and OG is more fiery and controversial and entertaining. That's the analogy.

I'm sure Messi can do that but we have never really seen it, have we? Maradona wasn't exactly showboating. He used them in an effective way like playing in a rabona cross for disguise or a backheel flick for the surprise element. You can use tricks in a very practical and efficient way if you want. Surely if Football is about entertainment, then this is a positive thing. The viewers love it.

@Fati_Future_BallonDor is Messi because he's relentless and consistent with his posts, calm and well behaved. Even if you foul Messi, he gets up immediately. Similarly, even when the trolls abuse Fati, he never abuses them back; just gets on with it.

OG was Maradona because he was the best ever poster at his best(highest peak), had a bit more knowledge in certain areas than Fati and was more of a leader. He was very entertaining and had some really really unhinged moments akin to that of a drug addict. Flawed genius.

True, we have never seen it that much with Messi.

Yeah, don't get me wrong - I wasn't implying Maradona was a showboater. His extravagance was married with effectiveness as you suggest.

Ah right, fair enough, that's an interesting analogy then even though I don't know much about OG.

You should read some of OG's content. He was extremely entertaining. Me and OG fought some legendary Barca Forum battles.
