Diego Maradona

Maradona is more naturally gifted and complete. Messi is more efficient and consistent. Maradona was a drug addict lol.
How could Maradona be more complete when Messi's goalscoring and decision making alone completely blow him out of water. Messi uses his right foot much better than Maradona ever could, better at heading (score more headers btw) and better at defending too (average more tackles/interceptions/blocks...).

Their style are similiar but Maradona played in a wilder way.

Talent wise they are same but Messi's ability to evolve is on different level.

One really interesting difference between Maradona and Messi's dribbling style (both being otherworldly level in this category of course) is just how long Maradona's strides were for his height (even shorter than Messi).

Messi has a unique style where his strides aren't long and he keeps the ball glued to his feet. In his prime (08-15), it was absolutely amazing to watch. Wenger commented on this specific aspect too
What's your take on the Messi vs Maradona prime debate?

Agree with my assessment overall?

Diego was absolutely TOYING with the opponents. Man vs kids.

Impressive how he condensed brilliance to be influential from start to finish at the biggest stage. Was like a man on a mission.

But honestly the stuff he does, there is an equivalent highlight that Messi has done too. Of course not condensed in a WC or big tournament but over the course of a longer period.

Can someone please tell me why Diego would be higher rated than Messi? People say Diego's prime was higher but what does Messi miss from his prime that doesn't put him above Maradona?

This is even without taking into account longevity. People aren't even sure when Messi's best version was, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2019?
Messi has surpassed Maradona way long ago. Just because before he didn't win World Cup (even though already tournament MVP) so hater would bring that to downplay him.

Single tournament highest level ever, especially given that it was the World Cup - Maradona

Single season highest level ever, over the course of a top league and CL campaign - Messi in 2011 or 2015. Was the absolute main man, dropped 90 G + A both seasons and won European double/Treble

Highest level over a 10 year "prime" - Messi and Pele, followed by CR7 (stats wise he is Messi and Pele level here, but his footballing level just didn't have magic)

Highest level over 20 years is a moot point. Even Messi and CR7 didn't have a longevity of 20 years (MLS, Saudi, youth years don't count).

Based on the 1986 World Cup games, Maradona did pretty decent defensively. I was surprised at his contribution off the ball.

Maradona had impeccable vision too and pulled off genius passes all the time. Maradona's first touch looks absolutely crazy. Some of the balls he controls and passes it while it's in the air is remarkable.

His game was wilder because of two reasons: his character and the era he was playing in. Defenders were literally assaulting him and the pitches were crap. The fact that his dribbling looks so smooth on those surfaces are a testament to his calibre.

Post 1986 World Cup Maradona could not dribble like how he used to. He rarely made mazy, incisive run or beat multi opponents.

Then you have Messi, dribble vs multiple defenders, mazy run, incisice run from very beginning of his career to the day he left Europe (at 35 he was the best dribbler in Europe statistically - high volume + high success rate).

Good post. Would you agree Maradona had a slightly higher entertainment value? He had some extra flair and je ne sais quoi in his game.

1986 WC is his highest peak. But one tournament didn't make him stronger at defending.

Agree with the rest.

Crujif: "You play football with your head, and your legs are there to help you":

"There is one ability, most of all one, that no one has ever had like Leo and myself: speed of thought," Maradona told Saturday's Gazzetta dello Sport.
"When I coached him the thing I saw in him that reminded me of myself was the lightning understanding of how the move would develop."
"It's an innate quality worthy of a computer. Had we been able to communicate with someone who thought at the same speed we could have both given even more."

Marcelo said the same thing about him

No disrespect, but what do you do in life? No matter which thread I open I see walls of text with your username next to it. How do you even do it?
I'd like to tell you, but not rising to your attempts to bait me. Don't think I haven't noticed it ;)

I am sure you are a nice enough guy, but it does seem a bit like you're trying to wind me up at times. No offence intended.

Edit: you have highlighted what I recognise myself, though. That I have been spending way too much time on here and it is time for me to take another break soon. So thank you.

True, we have never seen it that much with Messi.

Yeah, don't get me wrong - I wasn't implying Maradona was a showboater. His extravagance was married with effectiveness as you suggest.

Ah right, fair enough, that's an interesting analogy then even though I don't know much about OG.

You missed the GOAT user of bf.

The only man where Kingleo didnt even try to argue, he knew he had no chance against this beast.

We hope he will come back one day!
