Eric Abidal

I literally had a tear stream down my face. It's a very sad day because of the whole situation and how he still wanted to stay. I'm starting to like this club less and less. Change the club motto to "no more than a club" and remove the lies.

He gave it his all to this club. He was one of the world's best LB and CB from 2009-2011. Lots of memories I have from his performances, but this moment will always stick with me:

I have a feeling there is more than what is being said publicly about all this. I'm thinking it's possible that it was at least in part Abidal's decision to go, but the club wants to look "in control" & that it couldn't be possible that a player is unsettled/wants to leave. If the club was being so disrespectful & throwing him out w/o even attempting to negotiate anything with him, why would he be so keen on wanting to return here after he retires? If I were Abidal, I would be mega pissed if that's what really happened.

Either way, it all still stinks to high heaven, whether what we see/hear is true or not. Makes the club look like a bunch of jerks who have no regard for legends.

I really don't want him to go. I'm confused why this is happening. He looked great when playing. He clearly still wants to play. Why does he have to go then? We really are in need of defensive options and letting them go like this is stupid.

Legendary player. Only now do I fully realise how awesome he was! So solid, dependable, consistent. An example to his fellow colleague.

The future of Éric Abidal was also another hot topic of discussion during Vilanova’s conference. The manager reiterated that “it was a consensual decision by the Club” to not renew Abidal’s contract. He added: “I feel terrible about it. We know that we won’t find a left-footed centre back with his characteristics, we know that his case is exceptional. I hope he goes to a big club and that he gets the chance to show that he’s able to play at the highest level.”

So strange.

My thoughts exactly. Is he saying that he wanted Abidal to stay but was overruled, or is he lying (or 'spinning' if you're squeamish!)?

I think it was actually the decision by Zubi and Rosell, most likely due to finances and freeing up space for future players (youth or transfers).

I think I actually will get the new jersey with Abidal on the back. Whoohoo! :hooray:
