Eric Abidal

Maybe they shouldn't have promised him anything infront of the entire world if they knew they couldn't keep it?

since apparently Tito was the one who made the informal offer... well.

As much as I hate Zubi and like Abidal, Abi never returned to a proper level and Zubi called it right.

Bartomeu said that Abidal would get a new contract long before that.

Thats what people are referring to.

Josep Maria Bartomeu promised Abidal a new contract once he stepped on the field again. Said his contract was already drawn up and only needed a signature.

It was the right thing at time to say to offer support Abidal and stop him worrying about future.

In the end they were right not to offer him a playing contract though. Regardless if it went back on that promise.

All right then, I'd forgotten about Bartomeu making a show of it. Just another good reason to want him gone. Correct decision to let Abi go, however.

It is blown out of proportion that Barto 'lied' to Abidal.

I remember Laporta saying Ronaldinho would not be sold and he was gone a few months later.

These things happen in football. Circumstances change.

First off I don't think its a big deal either, at least in proportion to the other things Bartomeu is accused of :)
Don't know what are the changing circumstances you are alluding to in this case though.
Barto should have been cautious from the start, but he made himself vulnerable to criticism with his handling of the situation. There was always a (very high) probability that Abi would indeed return, but not at a sufficient level for the club in which case he had to go.

This however was a very delicate situation which was handled rather poorly.

Not really, on the whole the club treated Abidal brilliantly.

Giving him a new contract when he was diagnosed with cancer and then offering him a job with the club whenever he wanted it.

Barto made a comment about giving him a new contract when back but he was never really back fitness wise.

When Abidal really needed it the club gave him huge support.

Former Barcelona player Eric Abidal claims that he has turned down an offer to join the Spanish club's backroom staff and has decided instead to accept a job offer from Olympiakos.

Abidal, 35, ended his playing career in December with Greek club Olympiakos, and told France Football that his decision to join the Greek Super League's staff was influenced by the amount of free time he would be able to dedicate to his own Foundation work.

"It's not a job where you are on call 24 hours a day. I recently visited one of Olympiakos' sponsors in Switzerland and I took advantage of that trip to do some work with my Foundation too. They have said that I only need to be in Athens four days a month which is ideal for me," the 35-year-old explained.

Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu had offered Abidal the choice of two posts: one working with the club's football schools, or acting in an intermediary role between the first-team squad and the club's board of directors.

"[Lionel] Messi knows the president -- there's no need for me to go and see him on his behalf -- while the first option wouldn't leave me much time to dedicate to my Foundation work, whereas the Olympiakos job will," Abidal added.

The former defender made 125 appearances for Barcelona between 2007 and 2013, winning four La Liga titles and two Champions League trophies.

Abidal was diagnosed with a tumour on his liver in March 2011, and the following March underwent a liver transplant.

The Frenchman made his Barca playing comeback in March 2013 before moving to Monaco that summer, and then Olympiakos the following year.

Unexpected. :( On the one hand, I was hoping to see him around again, on the other, I don't want him to be linked with this disgusting array of corrupt retards that we call "the board".
