Ernesto Valverde

We actually had the perfect plan.

200m in the bank from Neymar. Valverde in to get the best out of the seniors for 2 years.

And we can slowly phase them out while having mountains of cash to rebuild for the next coach to come in a progressive manager who plays youth and has the funds to invest where it's needed.

Now we have no money, no ideas, unhappy players, and lost ou reputation as a feared team.

The problem is the club panicked and spent those 200 mil on 2 player who were not worth it. If the club kept the money like any smart board would have done, now we wouldn't be in this situation.

Nah, the damage EV inflicted on the club is still much greater than that of Setien.

Lmfao yeah ok dude 2 league titles, a copa and a final 1 game away from an undefeated season and close to the treble both years only losing out 4-4 And 4-3 on aggregate.

Cool story bro

EV and Setien were both shit, but it has to be said EV was marginally better. He did have a much better Messi in 18/19 though, so it's not saying much.

Messi was doing fine under EV even in the final season (when he wasn't injured). Setien filled his head with shit I said it from the start.

i cannot believe you lot are actually rehabilitating valverde just because the team he left (and never had the balls or the insight to adequately reinforce) got trashed only a few months after his sacking. considering the pandemic and all that, setien had little to no time to do anything with this team. (dont get me wrong, he is not and was never a barca-quality coach, and his sacking is a minor step in the right direction). but make no mistake: this barcelona side is what valverde left us with after 2 and a half years in charge. just because he wasnt managing in the last few months does not mean that the consequences of his actions suddenly disappeared.

barca's atrocious CL pushover mentality is a product of valverde's tenure and his lack of spine. he did nothing to change the team after Roma, which basically told the seniors (especially busquets) that no matter how shitty they were they would still play a lot. hence anfield, and hence the total lack of rebuilding after that calamity.

valverde not having the honour to resign after the roma debacle basically sent the message that colossal failure is acceptable. he should have left/been sacked immediately as a signal that at this club that sort of incompetence has NO place. his legacy is precisely the type of mentality that this squad brought to bayern.

it absolutely boggles me that you bunch are now reimagining him as some kind of genius. unbelievable.

What's your point then? If that's the case, is there a difference between, say, Pep and EV? Is that supposed to excuse or justify the disasters under EV? The leagues he won were decided by Messi, not his 'skill' as a manager.

Is the argument that, all of the sudden, losing a three-goal lead to both Roma and Liverpool is acceptable, and some sort of indication of superb coaching, simply because they were not as embarassing as an 8-2 thrashing?

I fail to see the point. If anything, your point simply suggests that EV was as mediocre as any other coach we've had in the last 20 years, not some kind of overachiever.

For away games yes he is as bad true.

The difference is everything else

Adapted to losing Neymar and switching to a 442 to nearly go undefeated and only losing because of a friendly benching Messi and mina being dreadful. Won the double

2nd season nearly won the treble if Dembele could score that final goal. Lost the final due to Liverpool loss still won the league.

3rd season who knows, had Messi injured most of it but still tip of the league, probably would have beaten RM as he has the best Clasico record out of any manager except pep and unbeaten in the league vs Real.

EV still comfortably had us top of the UCL group undefeated in the copa and 2 points clear at the top. With an injured Messi.

In my opinion if we kept EV we get through Bayern, they're not stronger than Liverpool were last year who we could have put 4 past in the 1st leg and fyi our xg stats were completely even over both legs so yes in 2019 we were at the level of Liverpool and took bad luck to knock us out and poor finishing and mistakes

Before EV
2016 won laliga by a point
2017 no laliga

During EV
2018 laliga
2019 laliga

After EV
2020 no laliga

Before people say oh it was a weak real Madrid. Lol so UCL winners RM with Ronaldo Kroos and Modric in 2018 were bad? Or maybe we were just that good

Real Madrid was so scared that they decided 68 points is enough. GOATverde magic. Truly the best to ever do it.

So, let me get this straight then. The confidence in the greatness and stature of this club has declined SO precipitously that the fans--in this case you--think that a manager who lost two three-goal leads in successive CL seasons, who won leagues only because of Messi, and who had us playing awful, unattractive football--that that approach and this manager should be retroactively praised?

It says a lot about our whole club--management, staff, players, and fans--that EV's failures are not only to be swept aside, but justified, and his reputation restored. Well, that's a small club mentality. And I guess that explains a lot. At Bayern and Real, failure is NEVER accepted. Whenever managers fail to deliver, they are immediately sacked. And that's probably partly why they have been so successful. Do you think Valverde would have survived Roma had he been coaching a Real side with CR7, as he did at Barca with Messi? Nope, never.

We need higher standards, and EV does not meet that expectation. Stop trying to defend him. It's pathetic.
