EURO 2016 Qualifying

24 countries is ok. Euro used to be 8 teams only. Teams keep getting better so it makes no sense to just stubbornly maintain the same amount. Even now there are quite a few good teams not making the tournament, i.e. Holland, Scotland & some of Denmark, Turkey, Croatia, Sweden, Scotland and Slovenia if everyone on 3rd place remained there in the last round.

I agree. I'm glad it's been opened out because without it, the top nations would qualify with little chance for the rest. For me, the qualifying round has been lit up by the likes of Wales and Northern Ireland who haven't participated in the finals of a major competition for a long time and you can tell how much it means to both countries that they have qualified.

What is the general feeling in the Netherlands? Why do people think this has happened?

Some say it's tactics, some say it's the older players not delivering anymore. Most agree, though, that Hiddink and Blind are to blame for this. Their squads have often been a bit strange imo, and under Hiddink's reign especially the team looked clueless tactically. Van Gaal gave us a rigid system, in which all players knew exactly what to do. This caused it to thrive in the World Cup. Hiddink, however, is a less hands-on type of manager, and that backfired spectacularly with our current set of players. Blind has been doing a bit better imo, but he too made some mistakes in the matches against Turkey and Iceland. He selected Vd Wiel and Martins Indi, who didn't play at their clubs at the time. Because of that, they lacked a certain sharpness and they both played horribly. Last game against Kazakhstan our line-up made sense though, so I'm fine with Blind for now. In my opinion, it was Hiddink who screwed it up most.

I, too, liked the 16 teams format better, even though the 24 one might still allow us to qualify. I'm not looking forward to watching games like Albania - Ireland or so in EURO 2016; 16 was a perfect number, with tough groups everywhere. Now, even subpar countries get to qualify, and it's not good for the quality of the tournament imo.

I mean, look back at the EURO 2012 groups: there's Germany - Portugal - Denmark - The Netherlands, there's France- Sweden - England - Ukraine.....that's what I want to see in a European championship.

You'll still have the opportunity to watch tough groups and great matches. You're not looking forward to watch Albania vs. Ireland, but Albania for instance qualified through second place, meaning it is automatically better than Netherlands at this moment, not necessarily on paper. Although it's not that Netherlands have played better and they deserved qualification, since the new players like Blind etc. stepped up the stage.

I don't watch Netherlands anymore... the name of the nation in football is just history. Under Van Gaal they played alright in the World Cup, but nothing special, or at least nowhere near the era of players like: Gullit, Van Basten or even Seedorf, Nistelrooy etc.

The "underdog" nations are emerging and even Wales are playing great at the moment, so I would fear more the underdogs (blindly considered so) nowadays than the names like: Netherlands, Denmark etc. who are everything but playing good football and being threats for the opponents at the moment.

I agree that we don't deserve to qualify, but I think that a better coach would have gotten a lot more out of our players. A big problem we got is the fact we don't have many good players from the ages 24-28. There's a new group of talented players coming 'round, and players like De Vrij should be able to become a key player in the years to come. I think it's quite premature to say we're just history now, but we'll see in the years to come.

And Mario Gasper scores in his debut for spain 0-1!

Spain gets a Penalty and Cesc blows it.
