there´s no use. Tito won´t change and barça will not have any striker. End of hopes. Not worthy to talk about it anymore.

And it continues to get nasty. Due to injuries and suspensions, Llorente was the only available CF and the senior player yesterday for Athletic's Europa League match, so he wore the armband. The abuse he got from the crowd (not just the curva) was appalling -- I listened to the game on the radio (as I was still at work) and even with my less than fluent spanish, I could understand the insults. He was jeered every time he touched the ball. Needless to say, he didn't have the very best game and didn't score. Today's lead article in the local Bilbao press was one about yesterday's game and crowd reaction was another judgment against Llorente.

This is the sort of stuff he's been dealing with since August and the club president is at least publicly refusing to consider letting him go. At this point, I think it's because he enjoys punishing Llorente for daring to leave and really doesn't care if he wrecks the guy's career. This stuff also has the effect of showing anyone else who might be thinking of leaving what will happen to them.

It's just apalling and it makes me very, very sad.

I hope (perhaps unrealistically) that he gets out in January. Anywhere will be better than the hell he's living right now.

He really should leave now... It's sad to see this happening. And it makes me wonder, is there anything he can do against this bullying?

His contract is up in June, so he's only got 6 more months of this stuff to deal with (worst case) and can negotiate himself with other clubs starting in January. Fifpro, the players union, is bringing it up to UEFA/FIFA/European Commission but I'm not too hopeful for action there. (I think there's more than enough grounds for a lawsuit though).

And when he goes in June I would be unsurprised if the other Fernando also goes. Amorebieta's contract is also up in June and there's been very little movement toward renewal. He's not getting any stick though, because he's unquestionably Basque.

Money isn't really the issue for the players, either. It's working conditions (even before the harassment). The number of guys who've had repetitive stress injuries since Bielsa took over is scary (I think my count of 5 surgeries is correct) and three of the players had to have painkilling injections to finish last year (which probably partly explains why they imploded in their copa finals). Add to that the really dismissive way in which a number of the senior players were treated by Bielsa last year and...bad situation. He's lost the dressing room. Additionally, they've got a club president that's anything but reasonable and who is, in fact, making matters much worse (in his statements to the press he's not so subtly egging the Llorente hate on, for example, and he's so far publicly refusing to consider letting him go in January).

Not sure about that, isn't he actually Venezuelan?

He was born to Basque parents in Venezuela... Llorente born in Bilbao but not to Basque parents. There's a funny relaxation to their rule which says only Basque people are eligible to play for the club. Apparently, anybody born in the region is also eligible

Llorente was actually born in Pamplona because an aunt worked at the hospital in question. He grew up in the Rioja. Pamplona is considered part of the wider Euskal Herria but yeah. Anyone born in the territory counts too. This applies also to Ander Herrera who was born in Bilbao (and who is right now being very very quiet lest the angry crowd start going after him).

Hmm, well I can't say i'm surprised. I remember having a discussion with you less than a year ago when Athletic were high flying, I said I thought they were a club of narrow minded hicks, you disagreed. I imagine you've moved closer to my view now though?
