i thought that villa played good.
and so did torres.
villa is small but look how he battled in the penalty area to get some of the balls.
and torres and villa had some nice connections

Villa was getting easily frustrated and Torres almost seemed hesitant at times, that is not how we want our guys to play. I would say more chances were made once Torres came in but still they were too weak.

Yeah Xavi was not looking his best either which surprised me a lot. Torres has an excuse having just come off an injury (and I believe he'll be fine again next match) and it's been known that Villa tends to underperform when he's up there by himself, but what was going on with Xavi and co?

to be honest, villa (who actually had a good game, better than any spaniard not named piqué or ramos) played torres clean through with a fucking CHEST PASS and el nino screwed it up, he's plainly not fit enough for competitive futbol.

but he has to play so he can get fit.

the problem with Xavi i think was space. he was placed front of Xabi and Busi, with not enough space to maneuver. Both of these players were distributing their balls to the wings, to stretch the defense, as they should. take out one of the two DM players and bring Xavi little bit back to the center of the midfield so he can run with space facing goal.

People always give strikers like Villa shit when he's not scoring hat tricks left and right. It's the same way they treated Eto'o even though Inter showed Samu doesn't need to be and out and out striker to be effective. Villa has shown time and time again that when he's getting choked out there he can contribute in other ways, and if Torres was more with it he could have very well created the winning goal. Certain people here are talking as if Villa had a howler and I just don't get it, he was constantly giving the Swiss fits even if he couldn't be as efficient as he would have liked.

But we need more assertiveness from the midfield first and foremost if Spain wants to make this easier.

people are just stupid, argentine.

they suffer from a serious lack of depth-perception. they can't see but five feet in front of their face (figuratively).

I don't think that any one man can carry the team like that, anyone who does is dumb and doesn't understand how football works.

Torres, please strengthen up man, perhaps if he bounces back to form then Villa will play better as well.
Eh say what? Maybe Torres can strengthen up so he can actually do something on the pitch? It must have been the worst substitution to make, Llorente would have pissed holes in that Swiss cheese with all his power.

I was absolutely annoyed by Torres. If you're not fit to play, then don't. Villa doesn't need him, he needs a midfield that is working, not another striker that isn't doing well and runs sulking like a white Anelka with every pass he receives. And that midfield wasn't doing that well (plus Spain in general were unlucky) with Silva as the sad masterpiece of it.

Admittedly he didn't do well yesterday, he was quite shit even, I'm not denying that, but how is he going to get back to form if he never gets played? Precisely why he didn't start, since it was obvious he wouldn't be up to form. They're putting him back a little at a time. They didn't do any worse with him there either, they still would have been shit without him.

Also you can't deny that in normal circumstances, Torres and Villa are a powerhouse and they both need each other. When that connection is made, goals are aplenty. The midfield is greatly important too and it was also lacking, but Torres is quite an important link as well.

I'll pick a lonely Villa with a top notch in form midfield of 5 anytime above a Torres link for Spain.
