Yup, it's the reason that so many players haven't won it or players that deserved 2-3 won only 1. It's a crime that owen has a ballon and batistuta doesn't or that cristiano has 3 and ronaldo has 2.
It's a testament to messi's greatness that he is on 5 ballons now.

Neymar being a finalist means higher salary. That was one of the reasons why his father wanted to wait with the renewal.

Thats only a very small minority though. Its more a popularity contest and on reputation and hype alone.
Ronaldo is nominated on his name aone yet most people consider it to be 100% fair. Only us Barca fans and a hand full of neutrals think he should not be there.

The award also gets why more value than it should. Only an idiot would rank a players greatness by this award.
Before the Messi vs Ronaldo it was anounced quietly.

"Barca won 4-1, oh by the way Dinho just won the baon d'or last weekend" ok cool...

Nowadays its like an oscar or something. I blame the media and Ronaldo for the obsession. For the media its money for Ronaldo its personal glory and overtaking Messi's legacy. Hence the stat obsession to keep up.
People currently are arguing that Ronaldo deserves to be top 3 because he scored more goals than Neymar, Lewa or Suarez and his rep of course.
People like Zidane, Dinho or Kaka won it by being the best performing players in clutch games/ guiding teams to trophies, which is completely undermined by stats currently.

Without penalties, does Ronaldo have more goals than Neymar in 2015 (all competitions)? I don't think he does.

It's weird how Neymar was only in one single top 3 of all those votes on the previous page, but still managed to be a finalist. He must've gotten a shitload of votes from South America or something that haven't been revealed yet.

Take this with a pinch of salt obviously- this is all a combination of genuine disclosures from friends and friends of friends, rumor, opinion etc
