I think that this transfer is being close to being finalized. Even more so after his agent visited the club office and had a meeting with the board less than 2 weeks ago. That's what my gut feeling is telling me. Frenkie clearly wants the move and another clue was his recent comment about Barcelona the city when he talked about his grandmother (if I recall) who lives near the Costa Brava. That was another giveaway to me. The club won't have much problem to match his wage demands. Maybe QSG and Man City will be willing to offer 10% or at most 20% higher wages but when we are talking about such large numbers and about such a wage increase compared to his current Ajax salary, it will have little bearing I imagine. Not to mention that he knows that if he performs well he will be ensured a higher wage in 2 or 3 seasons time (if not sooner). There are things that money can't buy. One of them is history. QSG and Man City are tiny clubs compared to Barça. Their only competition is money and in the case of Man City, Pep and somewhat of a sporting project.

There is also the actual city and environment (lifestyle) that you are going to live in for years. Here BCN is far, far ahead of Manchester (in particular) but likewise Paris.

Not to mention the obvious Ajax-Barça connection, the strong Dutch link, Busquets and Rakitic being almost 10 years older than de Jong and declining etc.

If I had to make a guess currently, I think it will be a question of when and not if de Jong turns into a Barça player. Let us hope so.

What a crazy state we are in where we now NEED the two Ajax lads as a matter of urgency .. given Rakitic's steep decline and Umtiti's future

Two players you've been after for some time. We doubted the wrong guy, folks.

AS is reporting that we are conceding and De Ligt will end up at Bayern or Juventus.

If true I don’t know what this stupid board is planning on spending out money doing. Getting Neymar back?

Missing out on De Jong is OK. Missing out on De Ligt is really unforgivable.

I'd prefer we got De Jong and a decent CB

And Di Marzio said not so long ago that Juve was told he is close to Barca.
Media are gonna make it a long soap opera, De Ligt will be joining a new club every week

I still think that we will buy both Frenkie and Rabiot.

Buying a 19 years old Cb for a world record fee among defenders historically isn't something what Barca would do.

I guess we will buy another Lenglet type of a transfer.
A good, cheaper Cb.
Not so shiny and overhyped.

De Ligt suitors are Bayern & Juve, doubt any of those paid more than 45M for a defender before so unless an EPL step up in interest there is a good chance he will be much cheaper than FDJ actually

I love that you don't see the periphrasis in that statement
On one hand you are pointing Lenglet as cheap option in the market who we are going for , this means no De Ligt
On the other hand, Lenglet is actually the most expensive Barca defensive transfer ever along Alves (depends on which currency you use and Alves add-ons, but he is surely our most expensive CB ever), so if we are going for club record breaking transfer De Ligt fit the description of another Lenglet too

Khaled, I meant in relative terms.
35m for Alves from 10 years ago was like 80m tiday for a Rb.
He was a world record.

Lenglet for 30 in 2018 is the same as 10m in 2006 or 15m in 2009.
For example, Chyngrisky was 25m or something like thaz, which is closer to 60-70m today.
So, in relative terms, Lenglet is an average/cheaper transfer.

If you are looking at absolute numbers without inflation, and without a year, then Lenglet is the most expensive signing.

Other recent transfer were actually more expensive than Lenglet's, when you compare them with prices from their era and player's age:
2005: Edmilson 10m, 28 years
2007: Milito 18.5m
2010: Mascherano 20-24m
Chingrynksy 25m
2014: Mathieu 20m, 30-ish years
2006: Thuram 5m for a 34 years old

Wasnt Lenglet 36m euros?

Pretty sure that would make him among the top 10 most expensive CB of all times. One of the most hyped up La Liga defenders for sure before we signed him.
