The thing is, I'm not convinced they lacked width because they didn't have any options. I'm just not sure it would have been useful this year, where Barca had a tendency to create an attacking midfielder traffic jam until Messi magic broke through. Without Villa and with Pedro's opportunism limited crossing and passing from the side was basically worthless, as out only competent goalscorers were all more comfortable dribbling into the box.

Don't understand the obsession with bale. He costs too much money, and is totally unsuited to what we need. He is not a defender and never will be, and a defender is what we need (the attacking comes from the right flank with alves or Montoya or even adriano) .. We need an abidal replacement and eric was a defensive player.

His attacking is also unsuited to us, he sprints forward and chases the ball before putting in a cross. Even if we did need an attacking back on that side (we don't) he needs to be Intelligent and pass the ball patiently like alves.

We don't have an Adebayor to head it in, we need to play the ball along the ground

Bale's crosses on the ground are better than his crosses in the air.

also his style of play is suited to being our fullback. yes he would have to learn patience and become more restrained (he has to do that anyway, he attacks too frequently right now) but I think he could do that.

he's no messi offcourse....that guy is not human. But as much as I hate Bale he's turning into a monster of a player. Right now I would compare him to the best wide men in the likes of Ribery, Robben, Di Maria etc etc. He's not as skillful as those yet, but the combination of power and pace he has is frighting. Another thing I like about him is that he's a player who try new things on the pitch. I expect his dribbling to improve alot next 12-18 months
