I can't call him a cancer when he was still one of our best CB since 2015. Clearly better than the likes of Lenglet, Umtiti, Todibo, Marlon, Oscar Mingueza etc. Plus it's not his fault that it took the club a while to get defenders like Kounde.
I'm going to be absolutely SLATED for this opinion
As much as I respect he was part of our best ever team, I, maybe controversially, do not believe he was the ''best'' centre back in the world for a number of years.
He was playing in a team that had 65%+ possession every single game and barely had to defend. The team had the ball and he could shine in possession which he did. He was an excellent distributor and read the game very well. However, after those couple of seasons with Puyol (who was a massive aid of course), he was susceptible to lack of concentration, poor positioning, idiotic last ditch tackles and constantly being destroyed in 1v1 scenarios. For somebody so tall, I never got the impression he was ultra dominant in the air either defensively. As the years rolled by in 2014 onwards, these traits worsened and I personally always had a stomach drop when I saw him in our first XI against the best teams. Admittedly, he did have to play alongside Marc Bartra for an extended period but the above still remains true. He benefittied from playing with extremely fast full backs too; I cannot remember how many times Jordi Alba saved his ass with recovery runs over the years.
In addition to on-field performances, his off the field antics pissed me off. Yes, Real are our arch enemy but his constant involvement in the media and bringing negative press to the club just screamed insecurity. I don't know if he believed they'd always be below us as long as he was there but now look at the state of things, which is why you remain respectful. Of course we dislike the fuckers but a true pro does it behind closed doors IMO. (See how Guardiola reacted to Mourinho's constant BS in those years for reference)
I also remember in 2018, he was constantly in the news for stupid indiscretions and ultimately watching him be destroyed week in week out by anybody with an oucne of pace/dribbling ability was becoming really tough. However, I must agree, it wasn't his fault his was on the pitch always too as the club signed absolute shit to play alongside him.
We should have been seeing the last of him in 2018 at the latest but the fact he was starting for us up until last season says alot about the club and the owners more than him.
However, he's been toxic since he got involved with Kosmos and it's been clear his mind has been elsewhere for a long time.
I feel he believes he's already Barca's president in his head while he's sitting on the bench, illusions of grandeur.
In concluding, I appreciate his involvement in making us the best club team ever but I had my reservations about him throughout those years, he gave me far too many heart attacks.
