Lol...You people just don't get it, I have been banging on about this since the start of this season.
Possession football has been sussed out for the most part. This started in 2009 with Chelsea, but teams wisened up over the years to the point that even teams like Valladoid can now succesfully do it fairly often.
Bayern (The super duper "improved" version of Barca) were able to get away with this because of their pathetic league, once they came up against team that had any clue on how to defend and counter, their title of "updated Barca" looked incredibly laughable, I'm not even sure they're a better team than we are now, nevermind peak Barca.
Again, possession football, all things considered has been figured out.
Tata realised this and tried to change it, he was not successful with it(mind you, he couldn't get his own players, and has only been in the job less than a year, pressure from all angles that we weren't playing the "barca way" after the 1st half of the season, plenty of off-field drama in the 2nd half of the season...e.t.c...but that's another issue entirely), but the fact that he realised this IS A GOOD THING, this team needs fresh ideas. We were able to beat Madrid again because we started to take more vertical risks and cede more possession. Tata may not be the ideal candidate because of his motivational skills, but what we need is someone that realises possession football is not THAT effective anymore and try to incorporate other things. Lucho and all these other Barca fanatics will NOT help.
I mean, this here says it all.
Barcelona 0- Bayern 7
12 months later, the same team that destroyed the possession team of 12 months ago, led by the master of tiki taka himself- Pep, changed their style into a possession obsessed one, then what happened?
Bayern 0- Real Madrid 5
It doesn't get any clearer than that.
For a team with so many amazing players like Messi, Robben, Iniesta and co to not score 1 goal in 360 minutes of football, while conceding 12 goals says that something is CLEARLY wrong with the possession tactics against teams that know how to counter it, this has absolutely nothing to do with Tata, but absolutely everything to do with our tactics and how anyone that doesn't bow down to the "Barca way" (which only started in 2009 by the way) and tries a different approach is (and will be) chastised to heavens. The sooner we realise this, the better it will be for us, otherwise, we WILL turn into also rans like Arsenal battling for 3rd place (and winning the possession league of course).
If the board wants this team to progress and not turn into an also ran like Arsenal, we should hire anyone BUT one of these "Barca DNA" fanatics like Lucho and co. They are wanna be Peps, we don't need wannabe Peps when even Pep himself is in big trouble right now.
But yeah, Tata is the cause of our downfall or something.
GREAT, GREAT post. My thoughts exactly.
