Gerardo "Tata" Martino

Ursegor

World Champion
Tata should be excused. He was handicapped by having to deal with Cesc who unbalanced the team. Glad those "Iniesta left wing, Neymar right wing" days are over now that the cancer is gone.

post-RSS Lucho > Tata > pre-RSS Lucho.

Though it's hard to compare when one has complete freedom in terms of squad building while the other had to deal with the squad he got, unable to make any changes. This year's team is simply much more balanced. Last year's squad was thinner, especially in defence.

Tata in the first half of the season had similar ideas as post-RSS Lucho but wasn't able to establish his ideas because (a) he never fully got support and (b) even the own players (Xavi) were against it. Never forget the Rayo game where we won 5-0 but only had 48% of the ball for which he got a lot of ridiculous criticism.

It's fair to point out that Tata had to play with
Pinto.
It's also important to stress that Rosell had little time and very few options to find a replacement after a sudden Tito's relapse at the end od pre-season.

Tata was a good but naive man. In the end; a mistake.

He didn't have to play with Pinto. We were able to sign a Liga keeper due to our main GK injury IIRC. Tata probably didn't care enough though.

Which quality GKs were available back then though? Also a new GK would have required some time to adapt to Barca style. And while Pinto really had some funny screwups, do you people really believe we lost the league because of him?

There were plenty of names flying around back then. Keylor Navas, Willy Caballero, etc. But in the end we stuck with Pinto.

Losing Valdes and Pique really harmed our chances man.

I really don't get this "pre-RSS Lucho" thing. What is that supposed to mean? We had a new coach who was working on a major overhaul in our play style. He was experimenting to find best solution for the current squad, but it is somehow considered " a msitake". This the first time I hear that the team that won no trophies previous year is not even allowed to do some experiments to find the new identity. Last time I checked the coach's performance is evaluated at the end of the season based on the trophies the team won or with the progress in the play style compared to previous season. What's next: compare pre Real Madrid Tata to after Levante Lucho?

Well a win in league game number 1 or 15 counts as much as one in 19 or 30. We dropped points because of Lucho's decisions in the 1st half of the season. Club was patient with him and after some time he figured out what to do but we could be leading the league right now.
Lucho should get all credit now but it is also right to criticize his previous work at the beginning of the season.

Every coach at some point makes a wrong decision and lose points. I've never seen anyone who was error-proof. If you want to compare him against Tata - wait until the season is over and do your comparisons. Again I don't understand how can someone say that Lucho was a stupid coach in the beginning of the season and now he is a great coach.

Lucho deserved a lot of criticism back then and deserves his share of praise now. Over the first half of the season, Martino's spell was undoubtably better. Second half is looking the opposite.
Why should this bother anyone though ?

Tata gave up on his job around this time last season i think. And what followed was some stupid brand of football from barca. Tata said he wanted to add some facets to our possession game, but he didn't do anything. After feb every match was boring, useless possession and recycling not creating enough chances. Madrid match was down to messi brilliance, we were in title race because atletico and real dropped some silly points because of the champions league.

Lucho said he will make the team unpredictable and he achieved it, sure he had many problems reaching there but it shows that he tried to change our style unlike some certain tata who was afraid to change anything and instead gave up on the job.

I don't know who is better the coach but lucho did a far better job than tata and lucho did not give up after some bad results. Maybe having a pre season helped but i did not like tata attitude in last few months. We could have won la liga if not for "Results won't change what will happen, i have already decided what i will do at the end of the season" attitude.

Simply because there was such a clear difference. Basically Lucho before the Sociedad game made strange team selections, shit rotations and the football we played was often horrible and boring. After that, he kept things more simple and changed his tactics to force a more transition-based style of play.

IMO you rarely see a team change entirely in such a short time span. Our transformation from meh to awesome was basically in one week, whereas normally teams take some weeks to evolve. Like Real Madrid last season who weren't that impressive in the first half of the season but got better from week to week.

Summed up well.

No one has said that he is a great coach. People are just giving him credit for what he has done since the Real Sociedad match. Give credit where credits due.
