Gianluigi Buffon

Sad to see a legend perform like that. That PSG adventure was such a wrong decision! He should have retired.

Areola has been better than him this season imo.
He's at PSG because they need players who up the club's reputation so they don't stay irrelevant in that farmers league.

The move to QSG was not really that strange.

Guaranteed domestic trophies. Playing in a top 5 league. Very high wages. Paris is not a too bad city to live in when wealthy. France being close to Italy, culturally as well in many ways thus Buffon feeling (I imagine, even think that he spoke about this in some interviews) fairly content/safe/familiar in Paris. Close to Italy in case he wants to go back quickly. Climate wise there is not a huge difference between Paris and Torino (Northwestern Italy).

Good chance of winning the CL with Mbappé and Neymar around and a very strong squad on paper. A good and highly rated coach on paper in Tuchel. Only Areola (decent but nothing special) to compete with for a starting place. Can rest in plenty of games without any problem.

Today's result very few people expected. When Man Utd were up 1-2 the bookies (Bet365) had PSG to go throw at 1.10. Basically nothing.

There were no other options for him in Italy, no in Spain (elite clubs), no in Germany (only 2 elite clubs if not only 1 in Bayern and they have Neuer) nor many in England. He could have gone to China, UAE, Qatar, KSA, Japan, MLS but he wanted that last chance for a CL win (said so himself) even more so after what happened for him in the CL last season and the fashion he exited the tournament. Paycheck wise he probably earns as much as he could in those countries so not an incitement for him.

So not really so strange. Even less so knowing what a big competitor even a 41 year old Buffon is.

I much prefer him going to the likes of PSG (even though I don't like them) than him wasting him time in some joke domestic league in Qatar, MLS, China or elsewhere.

I would understand what you are saying if Juve wanted him out, but they wanted to keep him and was his decision to leave.
Everything you said about PSG can be said about Juve and some more, may be the City of Paris is better but I doubt he cares enough to leave for the city alone.
It is even weird that he stays in Europe top club after you leave a team like Juve that you played for 17 years. Could have lived in some other great cities in retirement homes if he wanted easy life and good city, could have just stayed in Juve if he wanted to stay in top league.

Can't feel bad for a player that chooses psg over his longterm club. Should've just retired if fecking psg was the other choice. Good riddence now.

Happens to every keeper though, even the great ones.

No CL but he won the World Cup and league titles aplenty. Not too shabby.

He still has one final shot at it next year for QSG. In theory. Unless he leaves for another CL contender this summer. Very doubtful. However with QSG's pathetic CL record (pathetic won't even make it) he is unlikely to win it. Anyway the likes of R9 never won the CL either but nobody is questioning their status or legacy and Buffon will be no different. He has a quite booming trophy cabinet in his own right, CL or no CL.

I thought I saw a quote from his agent today saying his contract ends at the end of the season and they haven't renewed it yet. If he stays at PSG he definitely has another shot.

I love Buffon but i doubt hes a starter next season.. i can see PSG going big for Oblak or even DDG

would he be happy with a bench role? honestly if Cillessen wanted to leave (which is fair enough hes a great GK, too good to be a #2) i'd take Buffon on fair wages for a season

Not followed it but was told by a mate yesterday night that Buffon supposedly signed a 1 year extension with them or that at least both parties agreed to such an extension. Not researched any of it myself as I don't really care about any PSG news unless it relates to us or AC Milan.

No idea. Areola is not very impressive either despite being 15 years younger. He is already rotating with Areola this season if I am not wrong.

Yes, no doubt about it although he is nowhere near what he once was. Even a few years ago. Would still take him just to give him a chance to win that CL trophy.

He himself said that it was either PSG or the two Spanish giants or retirement not many months ago during an interview that he gave to La Gazzetta dello Sport. Not going to happen though. Think that he will stay for another year at PSG as a sub or rotational goalkeeper like this year.

Lmao what? He came 3rd for the ballon dor in 2017 and was incredible that season in UCL

Not close to being the best goalkeeper in the world for years, imo. As I've heard it Szczesny outperformed him last year, and that says it all.
Third in B'dor? I didn't know that, are you sure?? Btw Courtois won "Best goalkeeper in 2018".

De Gea, Oblak, Ter Stegen all levels above in recent years. Not hating on him - he is 41 ffs.
He should just have retired years ago.
