Hatem Ben Arfa hopes Newcastle can challenge for title

HATEM BEN ARFA insists he will be ready for the big kick-off against Tottenham Hotspur in 10 days time - for what he hopes will be the start of a title challenge.
And in a confident claim, the French playmaker believes that Newcastle United CAN challenge for the top honours this season.
Football observers may well scoff at Ben Arfa’s comments today, however, the France international stated he has confidence in his team-mates.
And in a hard-hitting first interview back after a summer of controversy with Les Bleus, Ben Arfa:
CLAIMED he and stars like Yohan Cabaye, Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse all want to stay on Tyneside;
ARGUED the Magpies can challenge for silverware this season – including a title challenge;
SHRUGGED off his fall-out with the French Football Federation and suggested his love for Newcastle United was stronger;
STATED he will prove he can work with his manager Alan Pardew despite problems with Laurent Blanc.
Ben Arfa made a 45-minute cameo last night in his first slice of action since Euro 2012 against Sweden, the night he fell out with Blanc and team-mates before offering to quit the French team.
But while his comments about winning the title will be taken by a pinch of salt by even his own fans, the big question is whether he will be ready for the Spurs game.
Ben Arfa is behind his team-mates in terms of conditioning, although he looked pretty sharp at Hartlepool during the 5-1 win.
When asked if he’d be ready for the big kick off, he told the Chronicle in an exclusive interview: “I don’t know. It is up to the manager and the fitness coaches. They will make the decision.
“But I’m ready to be on the pitch or the bench – no problem. I will do what the manager says to me.”
United stars have been linked with moves away all summer with Arsenal thought to be interested in Ben Arfa.
But he made his feelings clear about his future. He said: “I very happy to stay here. I’m happy to be back at Newcastle again.
“I love this club and the supporters. I love them and they like me.
“It is very good for me to see the fans here.”
And he stated there were no issues between him and the Toon management team, despite his absence at the club’s Portugal training base.
Ben Arfa said: “Everybody wants me here. They told me to ‘come on’ and encouraged me. It is great support for me.”
With Toon fans frustrated about the lack of signings this summer Ben Arfa also tried to lift Geordie fans – and with Ba, Cisse and Cabaye and Co on board, he feels that anything is possible.
A smiling Ben Arfa said: “All the players have stayed here.
“I think we have to have confidence as we have very good players.
“Maybe if we feel very good we can finish between fourth and first.
“Why not? Why can we not say we could be champions?
“Maybe? Anything is possible.
“We can challenge for it. We have good players, a good stadium and great supporters.
“We have to have confidence. I believe we can do what I say.”
Ben Arfa’s second-half appearance brought cheers from the 2,500 Newcastle fans who made the journey to Pool last night. He reflected: “It’s nice to be back on the pitch and I am happy I played 45 minutes.
“I feel very good. I will step things up and hopefully I can be ready quickly.
“I stayed in Europe for one month and even though I was on holiday I played football with my friends.
“Now I feel good but I go step by step. The most important thing was to be on the pitch and feel the sensation again.
“You just want to get back to that feeling, feeling good on the pitch.
“You want to feel good with the ball and with your team-mates.”

ESPN Soccernet: Hatem Ben Arfa thinks Newcastle could win the Premier League this season. Is he mad?
Newcastle had the chance to finish 3rd on the final day of the season. The natural progression is to aim even higher so why not try to be fighting for the title on the last day.
There is nothing wrong with being ambitious.
Newcastle have a very very good team and we have added some good young players, our squad is looking good. Therefore I am expecting us to go one step better and finish in the top 4 this season.
This is football though and anything can happen, who knows we could do a Dortmund and come out of nowhere and win the title after finishing 5th the season before. Very very very unlikely but all the same it is a possibility albeit an unlikely one. I'm sure if a Dortmund player in preseason 2010/2011 said they wanted to fight for the title after finishing 5th the season before would have been laughed at also. But like I say, this is football and anything can happen.
I'm expecting Newcastle to be one of the more exciting teams to watch next season. We will score a lot of goals next season.
Papiss Cisse will actually start the season with us and Ben Arfa will actually start the season on the pitch instead of the bench. Cabaye will have adapted to the Premier League and know exactly what is needed. Sylvain Marveaux is going to burst on to the scene after being injured all of last season and probably earn a call up to the French National team. Romain Amalfitano will breakthrough also and impress. Gabriel Obertan looks much much improved over preseason and Dan Gosling looks ready to make his mark aslo.
Watch out for Mehdi Abeid and Harris Vuckic also.

It's one thing being ambitious and one thing being delusional. In this case it is the latter.
Even if they had finished third they were still, uhmm, 20 points or something away from man united and city. A realistic and ambitious goal for Newcastle is to finish top 4.

Newcastle have a very very good team. He believes we have the quality to at least fight for the title. I say he should go for it.

He has been omitted from the France Squad for the Uruguay friendly.
The reasons are no doubt:
1. He had MASSIVE fights with Dechamps at Marseilles
2. He fell out with Laurent Blanc at the Euro's and told him to send him home if he had no faith in him.
He has a big job on his hands to get back into the squad. I'm sure he will relish the challenge and give his all at Newcastle, having a stellar season forcing Deschamps to name him in his future squads.
