La Masia used to mean something
Regarding La Masia, I have wrote before, there is a very high chance that we have seen a peak from La Masia and that it will never again come close to that level.
A few reasons why:
1. around 2000', when we bought/created Messi, Xavi, Iniesta...
There was no internet, youtube, streaming matches like today.
If you wanted to watch a kid from Argentina, you had to go there and actually watch his matches.
Or you needed to have "your guys" there who will give you reports about local talents.
Now, it sounds reasonable to think that Barca had more money to pay their scouts to travel all over the globe and check kids from Brasil, Argentina, Croatia, Russia, Netherlands, France, Japan or Korea, than let's say Las Palmas or Fc Nice.
So, imo, back then, the biggest clubs had monopoly on BOTH:
1) domestic talent
2) and talent from all over the world
It means that all domestic talent from small clubs were signed by Barca and Real.
Also, kids from Brasil and Argentina were bought ONLY by Barca, Real and Italian clubs.
Now, fast forward to 2010 or 2020:
Today every single club, like Las Palmas, Fc Nice or even Dinamo Zagreb has money and tons of scouts who are travelling all over the world, or who can check stats from 1000s of internet sites, youtube videos, twitter posts, who watch 100s of matches from their home through streaming sites.
So, 20-30 years ago: Barca, Real and 2-3 Italian clubs had all the monopoly.
Today:
1. all Spanish clubs are scouting and buying young talents
2. and in Europe, 100s of teams are chasing young kids from all over the world.
So, only this fact would severly reduce chances from La Masia to be as good and as productive as in 2000 or 2010.
2. second: we cheated.
We were the biggest cheaters in terms of breaking rules and hiring foreign kids.
20 years ago, we were signing 10s of best foreign kids per year.
Today we can sign only 2-3 of them per year, iirc.
So, another point why chances from La Masia to produce as good talents as 20 years ago=is highly unlikely.
With a current rules and restrictions, we would have probably never signed 13 years old Messi.
3. what if we were just lucky with the best generation ever?
Again, paired with a fact that Messi, Iniesta and similar would never end at Barca in a current era.
Iniesta would have been signed by some random Spanish club.
Messi would have been signed by Psg or Dortmund today.
Busi would have been signed by Pep and Man City aged 19 etc.
So, is it even possible to create new Messi, Iniesta or Busi in these circumstances?
4. for the end, a level of quality of top teams is higher than in 2000 or in 2010.
Let's say that a level of skills of Barca B players was always at 30 out of 100.
Level of a first team football in 2000 was at 80 out of 100.
Level of a first team football in 2010 was at 90 out of 100.
And a level of a first team football in 2020 is 100 out of 100.
That means that a gap between Barca B and our first team is way bigger than before.
In 2000, Barca B players needed to improve from a level 30 to a level 80 to be good enough for a first team.
In 2010, they needed to improve from a level 30 to a level 90.
Today they need to improve from a level 30 to a level 100.
In the future, a required level will be even higher, let's say 110 or 120.
Which means that it is way harder to "survive" that jump.
Further, Barca B players who had skills 30/100 in 2000, and who eventually improved to a level 80/100, like Gabri or Oleguer were good enough to play at Barca in that era when the level of quality in world's football was lower.
Today, Gabri or Oleguer with skills level 80/100 would be bad, like Montoya or Samper, and they wouldn't be good enough for Barca's squad level (since today a required level is 100/100).
I mean, it is easy to say: the board ruined La Masia.
Who knows?
Maybe they have also ruined it.
But what if they figured out that there is too much competition today and they gave up from it (to some extent)?
Since today, it is hard to buy a true foreign or Spanish gem anymore.
And you can get a new Thiago or Iniesta only if some local kid from Barcelona will be born with insane skills, or if you somehow snatch a Brasilian kid infront of Psg, City and English clubs.
And even THEN, if you steal a kid, you can still lose him when he reaches 16 or 18, like we are lately losing lots of kids to other rich clubs (Simmons).
My opinion is that when you look at these points objectively (without urban myth ideas how La Masia is magically producing the best talents in the world with a magical dust out of a thin air)=we can forget about La Masia.
A golden era or anything even close to it will repeat never again.
In fact, with a free "playing field" due to new EU rules, protecting kids and internet era where more and more clubs from Europe (Leipzig, Dinamo Zagreb, Russian clubs etc) are also buying young talents from South America, chances for Barca to steal/discover new Messi/Iniesta will be even slimmer than today.
