Jan Vertonghen

Best midfielder around
I don't understand some people on this forum. Saying that we shouldn't buy Hummels, because he's too slow, attacking and similar to Pique, but after watching almost every Spurs match this season I can say that Vertonghen is much more similar to Pique. Loves going forward and and he's also slow. He's decent at defending and very good at attacking. Crying for us to get Vertonghen makes you all look clueless, sorry.

it would be really important for Barca to have 1 fast CB, because they get many goals on counteratacks (espacially in CL-games..)

Vertonghen is nothing like Piqué. He is a great defender, especially his tackling. Of course good defenders will have the same characteristics.. in modern football defenders are supposed to contribute to the attack every once and a while. If that means I'm clueless then so be it.
And Vertonghen isn't slow. What a myth. He isn't fast but it's not like he's slow either.. it's not one thing or the other. He has decent pace for a defender.

To be honest as long as we stick with Pique it might be better to have a real stopper at the other CB position than having Hummels or Vertonghen. But my ideal would be Thiago Silva and Vertonghen, an ideal pairing if you ask me. Strenght, aerial ability, good defending and position and good footballers. I would die for such a defensive CB duo!

Thiago Silva would be impossible. Marquinos would be our best bet. He's faster than piqué or bartra and in a couple years could compete with Verane for best defender in Spain. If you ever what Thiago silva was like before he became well known, just watch marquinhos. He's the future Thiago Silva and could still be bought at a decent price.

Today EMD are talking about Rami or Mathieu as our possible reinforcements at CB. Surely Vertonghen must be better than those 2? What would be his price?

Levy is not thrifty with his players, Vertonghen would likely cost more than either Rami or Mathieu and he'd still require adjusting to Spain...Still a fan of Mathieu, not sure what he looks like at CB but he's a quality player

You are right about the price, but I believe Vertonghen won't need much adapting to Spanish football. He already played at a side (Ajax) that played posession-based football, building from the back and with a high defensive line. Spanish football, especially Barca, is not much different except the level of players is higher. But that he has already encountered in England.

But probably he will cost around 25M, so I guess we won't pay that. Mark my words; we will be stuck with a mediocre CB to not spend too much...

Surely we should have 25M available for a CB, no? Neymar is paid over 3 years, so normally we only need to pay 16M for him this summer, which leaves us with 34M from our transfer-budget of 50M. Couple that with the outgoing sales (at least 15M), and we should have 50M available for both Ter Stegen (15M?) and a high-profile defender like Vertonghen.

Is he on high wages at Tottenham?

True, but somehow I suspect Zubi and Rosell not wanting to pay much for a CB... But I might be wrong!

He shouldn't be that high on wages, he made around 1.5-1.7 million at Ajax, so I guess around 2.5-3.0 at Tottenham.
