why do we always like to go after average defenders/backs ? what if Alba or Vertongen turn to be another Chygrynisikiypokihipiko?

Well Vertongen, like Chyggy, the appeal is that he's a two way player who can contribute to the possession game, and from what I've seen, he's more mobile than Chyggy who was too slow to adjust to a high line.

That doesn't make him a "safe" player by any means but he's definitely what Barca would look for in a defender.

Indeed. Exactly what we need since he can play at CB and LB plus we know his price (In the 10 - 15m price range), which is far cheaper than our reported main targets.

This leads me to believe that we are a lot closer to our priority targets than us common folk know.

Good point. You just might be right.

I really don't know how some of you guys rate him that much.I saw him playing against my home team couple of years ago in the CL qualifications round and he was mediocre as a CB.
I mean you can't i.e bash Suarez' goal records in Eredivisie cause it's easy to score there and at the same time say that Vertonghen is the one for us.The dutch league has been in decline for some time now and so have their academies especially Ajax's.Time will only tell but for now i think we do the right thing not going for him.

Normally I just read on this forum for the news, but I had to react to this.

I find it a bit weird that your opinion on him is based on a game from a few years ago.
I am an Ajax fan, so I see him play every week. And he is not mediocre at all.

I have never seen a CB like him actually, it's like he can get to the opponents goal in 4 steps.
He has everything a CB needs in an attacking team. He would be perfect for Barca.

About the dutch league, I don't think it's in decline at all.
Teams just like to attack, which means there can sometimes be a lot of space. I see teams with a 4 million budget that play better football than Chelsea, a multi million dollar club with huge debts. That's the difference, the money. Dutch clubs can't be in debt, otherwise the KNVB will forbid them to maken any transfers. The teams did great in Europe and ended 4th on the most points gathered this season.

I get the feeling you don't even watch the Dutch league and just follow what the media says. The academy's are not in decline, the talents just don't get hyped as much as from other country's. I see young players making their debut each week, but you don't hear or see any of that because it's not from one of the big money leagues. And I believe Ajax beat Barca in the next gen series, and some other tournaments so it's not in decline. It's only getting better.

Vertonghen used to be average, but in the last 2 years - and last year especially - he developed into an excellent, complete player. In the CL, he was excellent against Lyon, and he was decisive in the league as well. He's not slow, technically strong, and decent defensively, though sometimes lacking in concentration, but that's what the Eredivisie does to him. He's too good for Ajax, that's for sure, and I think he'd be a relatively cheap player who could add something to our squad for sure.

Sorry maybe i didn't make myself clear.I saw him live in the Cl qualifications against PAOK and i wasn't that much impressed since he was given a hard time by a weaker side.I have of course watched many Ajax's games since then, mainly in the CL and my opinion hasn't changed that much but since you are a supporter i won't argue as you have a more rounded view of the player.

Regarding the Eredivisie i beg to differ.Few years ago Ajax and PSV were considered among the best teams in CL heck even Heerenveen had some good runs if i remember correctly.
Players were better and used to get hyped a lot although they weren't from big money league, players like Sneidjer,VdV,Suarez,Van Bommel,Affelay,De Jong to name a few.

Kroos with a higher rating than Xavi. The day we've all feared has finally arrived. I don't want to live on this planet anymore. :pep:

Vertonghen is going for Spurs because they are the ones who are showing the most interest. IMO he should have waited a bit to see if Modric/Bale end up leaving them, since with Chelsea nicking their CL spot, they might well have a transition season next year.

It is a bit odd to see Tottenham in the pole position for Vertonghen. I think he can do better than Spurs. Bayern, for example, would be an ideal option. They could really use him.

EPL > Bundesliga and in the EPL he'll get a much bigger profile. Simple as that really.
